  • Finishing a new boat

I want to protect the epoxy finish from UV rays on a new boat by spraying on a coat of clear. Instead of simply using marine polyurethane, I am looking for something that comes in two parts; material plus accelerant (limited spray booth time). I’ll be wet sanding between coats so I would like a product that sands well. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

I just refinished my boat - used a two part urethane clear coat over the epoxy... on final finish used 1000, 1200, and then 1500 grit and finished off using 3M buffing compound. Can pick up the clear coat at any place they sell auto paint but defer to those experts who have numerous years experience with various clear coats on hydros.. An old auto painter gave me the tip of putting tape (blue/masking) on edges when sanding/buffing so not to go through clear coat on edges...

Kurt , and anyone else wanting to paint there boat. Sand with 320, tape off areas you don't want to paint with tape, spray a coat of sealer, let dry 30 min. Apply your 1st coat of base color, you want to spray at least 3 coats, 15 minutes between coats. Untape areas you taped off , tack off boat with a tack rag, if any flaws use a piece of 1000 wet grit sandpaper , then apply light coat of base to fix any spot. Now your ready for clear ,use automotive clear DuPont or PPG follow mixing directions on can. Apply 1 light light tack coat so it gets sticky, wait 10 min then apply a medium coat, let dry for 15-20 min then apply a wet coat or money coat. If you take your time you won't have buff them! If you do f it up , wet sand with 1000 next day and buff, that's alot of info to tell you what you need. I have been painting boats this way since the 90's and all of my boats look pretty nice, or you could just pay me to paint it since I do own a couple of collision centers. House of color has a great selection of custom colors & neon colors , any questions call the shop m-f 9-5 @ 540-347-1030 Paul
