  • Setting Up TinyTach

Anybody have a foolproof way of setting up the TinyTach to get accurate readings for a Y102/Y302)? Had problems getting accurate readings on my set up. From various folks I've talked to, this seems to be a reoccurring problem with the TinyTach.

I had the TT grounding strap attached to a steering bar mounting bolt and lead wrapped around lower sparkplug lead (and tried upper lead) and TT set to 90 degress but get inconsistent readings. Any recommendations out there (besides going out and buying a MyChron4 for $500...)?

    Appreciate any input.

    Thanks

      Tach

Put the sensor lead on the wire coming out of the mag going to the kill switch. This will give a better reading. These tachs are generally no good for what we need and are prone to failure.

        Tiny Tach

I would call Tiny Tach and speak to the tech dept for what to do. Phone # I have is 630-920-1300. Did you buy it less than a year ago? They have a 1 year warranty.

From your description of the 90 degree setting I believe you have the latest multi adjustable model. Are the readings you get lower than what they should be or higher or not very steady at a constant rpm? Try setting it to 1 spark per 1 rev and wrap onr plug wire. If no go try 1 spark per 1/2 rev and wrap both plug wires.

I have a Y80 with points and an older Merc 25ss with CD ignition and using the older 1C model I (no longer available) was told by TT tech to wrap both plug wires with 4 turns each. This provided accurate results on the 25ss. I have yet to try this on the Y80.

I buddy has the updated model you appear to have and he can't get it to work on his 4 cylindere 30H. However the older model he has does work, go figure.

          Get the right one.

The Tiny Tach should work great for you. They have made changes in there primary tach to meet the needs of their main customer, Briggs and Stratton.
When you order you need to ask for the "O" model. It is really best to talk to one of the techs and tell them how you want to use the tach. They will tell you what to do. With out this request you will get the B&S version. I have now used six of these. The only time it did not work was when I got the wrong tach.
