  • New D Stock Hydro

About half way thru building my new Tohatsu powered D stock hull....sorta new territory for me...using honeycomb for the cockpit sides, bottom, sponson frames, and gussets...kinda learning as a go. Will post pics in a few days....hopefully will come in quite a bit lighter then my wrecked boat. David

Dave I will be doing the same thing for three new boats.. Have you discovered any tricks or things you should not do so far?? It wont seem right not being able to use nails and screws!!

        D stock

Darren...that thing looks fast just sitting there....So far I have found that Hysol seems to work best for honeycomb to honeycomb bonding....and West system seems to work ok for wood to honeycomb. Did some test bonding last night...pretty interesting stuff. Boat is gonna be dang near the same as old boat...just a touch more lift, and one inch longer. Now I need to get bent crank from Tohatsu fixed and I am ready to race!

How do you guys cut this material? I used a carbide jigsaw blade.

I use a carbide jigsaw blade for a curved cuts and thin carbide 10" 40 tooth table saw blade for straight cuts. Neither last very long in Nomex core. Wear a good respirator as the Nomex core is nasty!

You will need to seal the ends/edges. I used a Eye bolt round part that the diameter would fit into the open cut and tap lightly to crush the honeycomb at 1/4 in deep then fill with epoxy/wood flower mix. Then where you need to drill through the honeycomb. Drill a larger hole than needed and insert a wood dowel into the hole with epoxy. Now you can drill through the dowel and attach screws, etc. for bonding and hardware attachment.
Frankly, a pain in the rear end. The DSH I built was 130 lbs finished/ with hardware and I only used honeycomb for the combings. problem is if water gets into the honeycomb. Big problems. I do not think it is worth the added cost of material/labor.
Vacuum Bagging your panels is a better way.

Bill, with this orange board, water intrusion is not a problem at all...............it is not foam or cardboard core........drilling through it for hardware mounting is not a problem either, as it does not crush.........................Drew Thompson has been using it for years and my CMR is built with it, and I have no of the problems you are describing here, but the edges do need sealed, but got that taken care of also.............also, the added strength and weight savings DOES make it worth the added costs..............

                        Weight Of The Side

How much does the combing weigh in the stage it was installed ? One side only. I understand it is not trimmed, or finished. I am simply comparing to a few different materials I have used.
