  • Lay-down boat for CSH?

In about two weeks I should be getting my first ride in a kneeler CSH.
There is substantial question as to whether my lower back is going to tolerate that driving position.
Is anyone having good results using a lay down boat in this class?
I think I saw where someone is using a sit-down setup, but I don't remember who that was.
If the kneeling thing doesn't work out for me, it looks like I'll be forced to go to the PRO boats with a significantly higher investment, and (from what I can tell) fewer and more distant races.
    Thoughts?

Mike Phillips, owner of this fine website, builds boats. In fact he has a CMH laydown that he drives. I suppose the same boat could be used in CSH as well. I've seen a few other laydown designs for this class. So, there are plenty of options for you if a laydown style boat is what you need.

          It depends

Depends...can't answer it here without knowing your weight, the boat design, it's center of gravity and lift, relative to your weight. A particular boat that works for someone weighing 180lbs, might not work for you if you're 220-230.
Just have to try different boats,...sorry no easy answer.
Stock Outboard Racing!....because other sports,....golf, football, baseball, etc....only require one Ball!

I have this one I built as a C Mod and I have also built one as a CSH for folks in the 200-210 area of weight.. They corner and run great.. My daughter is now running it..

I started working with the laydown since my knees and back cannot do the kneeler anymore.. I understand where you are coming from..

Go to the Hydroracer portal page and look for the ad MRC

              The hunt goes on!

              All,
Thanks for the suggestions. I've sent Diane an e-mail to see if she still has her lay-down boat for sale. She sold the 302, so I would be looking for one of those also.
For those who wondered, I USED to be 5'8", but think I'm closer to 5'7" now.
Weight is around 175 pounds without gear.
I've not totally ruled out a kneeler yet, just wanting to have an alternative if I REALLY like running the boat, but can't tolerate the driving position.
              Stay tuned!

Bob, I know everybody's different. But as for me, I've suffered from a pinched nerve in my lower back for quite some time. In my own case, my back does better in a kneeling down position than a laying on my stomach position (or on my back for that matter) I can kneel down almost indefinitely, but I can only lay on my stomach for maybe five minutes before I get very uncomfortable.
Let us know how you do on your first ride.
                Thanks.

I have a boat for sale that was originally built and set up as a laydown. When I ran it I was around your weight.

Aside from that, a laydown boat will and had worked in CSH. It is all about partnering the design of the boat to the driver and then balancing the boats performance through testing.

Attached is a picture of my boat when it was a laydown.
