The event featured more than 200 boaters and drew over 1,500 spectators to the lakefront park. It was held as a fundraiser for the Tim Hortons Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps children in need attend summer camp. More than $1,000 was raised for the charity, helping to send one lucky child to a Parry Sound camp this past summer.
With the success of this year’s event, Elliott requested that council allow the event to return next year on June 23 and 24 for an even bigger and better race.
“One of the main things we want to improve on is having professional announcers there and having proper stereo setups for that,” he said.
The event this past summer received a large amount of support from sponsors. It also received support from Deputy Mayor Jeff Watson and Coun. Bob Colhoun.
“We accomplished two things: we were able to put Gravenhurst on the map and we were able to stimulate the economy, and that’s the thing that we all want to see and that’s what we strive for,” said Watson. “It’s so nice to see the young folks really work hard and put forth the effort, and receive the accolades that you have done.”
