One man's thoughts on powerboat racing

The accident was a tragedy, but it could have happened anywhere.
And it has happened elsewhere..That guy is a jerk... Maybe he should
go to Homestead Nov. 20 and experience some real noise and lots
of pretty painted up rigs.. We have been to Key West 10 out of the last
12 years, always in Feb.. Always wanted to watch the races at Key
West,, but we always go to the Texas coast in Nov.
The Key West race hopefully will continue as it has lots of space
for spectators who like the sport and who like to get crazy on
Duvall Street afterwards..

I have mixed thoughts about what this guy has to say.....do we live in a sheltered world where everything goes the way we think it should? Of course not....we have friends and neighbors that engage in activities and hobbies that we may not like or enjoy, but we respect them for what they are doing....I don't really care much for car racing, but I don't drive up the Evergreen Speedway on a Saturday night to ***** an complain about the ruckass and stuff they put out....what's the point? The kid that lives down the street from me rides his skateboard all over the place....not something I am going to get into, but do I complain to his mom? Of course not....why the animosity towards boat racing? Maybe the people complaining simply have nothing better to do...I used to be race director at Silver Lake Eatonville, and a resident used to come up to me on Friday before the race and go up one side of me and down the other over the fact that we were using "his" lake for a regatta...I may be paraphrasing...but I asked him what his big beef was every year...did he have a boat he wanted to use that weekend? No....was it the noise? well....sorta, but he was allready half deaf so I don't think that was a big deal...was it the traffic we generated on the road to the lake? No.....he could not give me a single good reason why he did not want us there...it was just the fact that people were enjoying themselves and he was not a part of it. I asked him if he would like to come help us out race weekend...maybe pit for somebody that came alone or something like that...and he left in a huff.....he is in his late 70s now and still shows up at the resort when we race, but he to my knowledge does not ***** much....just something to think about.

You might also like Key West if you are one of those who pursues an "alternate lifestyle". There's quite a bit of that down there.
Funny thing though, each year when the Phil Peterson Poker Run from Miami to the Keys goes on, that sort of activity becomes notably less visible.
I don't know if the presence of several thousand "motorcycle enthusiasts" (almost said Harley riders!) in town has anything to do with it though.

I don't think he is neccesarily old or retired, I think he is trying to live his life as a "Minimalist".

Ultimately, it argues that you’ll find more life when you intentionally choose to reduce your possessions. You’ll find more time, energy, and finances to pursue your greatest passions. And love the freedom that comes from owning less.

Which is fine... admirable... It's just that some people who believe that they have "cracked the code of life" insist on believing that the rest of us 'just don't get it" if we choose a different path... A sort of moral superiority.

Typically it results in their want to begin to impose their moral rightness on those of us who need some enlightening, which enevitably leads to more "governing", which always leads to less of the freedom that they seek.

Like everyone has said it's one man's opinon. He has the right in our country. But this is probably the same man who calls the cops on his neighbors going 25 in 20mph zones, drinks white zinphidel, got bullied by jocks in HS and subsequently hates all sports in general, gets upset when any tax dollars go towards his south florida sporting frachises, and has a blog to write and b*** about how boat racing has ruined the sunsets....Got to love America! Maybe he'd be more comfertable if the world didn't have 7 billion other people in it....

Anyways, it’s Veteran’s Day. Keep things in perspective.

While you are arguing with me over loud fast speedboats, an infantry patrol is sitting in a hum vee wondering if that goat herder at the end of the road is just moving his flock or getting ready to launch an rpg.

While you are *****ing that the fries you got at the drive through have too much salt, some 18 year old private, less than a year removed from high school, has been eating MRE’s for a week and is freezing cold standing midnight guard duty, wondering if he will ever see home or family again.

While you are beating drums and Occupying Bugtustle or wherever the hell you are, some young woman is sitting alone in her living room, a crying infant in one arm, a folded American flag in the other, wondering how she will make it without her husband.

Keep things in perspective.

As for Veteran’s Day, make it an all year thing. When you see somebody in uniform, shake their hand, tip your hat, nod, say “Thank You”. If you are at the airport and see somebody in uniform standing in line to get something to eat, pull some money out and buy them dinner. Make them feel appreciated, if only for a few moments. It’s the least we can do.

So from the Fritter, to all you who are or have been in the military, let me give a very humble and heartfelt, thank you, for all you have done and sacrificed for this country.
