    More about Yukon 800

The rules require 3 people in the boat. Their combined weight must equal the weight of the previous year's winners combined weight for all 3 crew members or they must carry extra weight. Other than that the weight of the boat is not restricted.

The total weight of a boat with a full load of fuel is about 1500 pounds. Almost everyone uses the Yamaha 50 short shaft, there have been a couple guys run the OMC twin (same as 45SS powerhead), it has better torque than the Yammie, but is harder to keep together running 7000 RPM for 13 hours. Props are typically 12 or 12.5 X 20-22 cleavers, the OMC with the lower gears will run a 12 X 25. Nosecones with a water pressure gauge are used, rev limiters removed, but otherwise they remain stock, or are supposed to be. Top 3 finishers are torn down.

Other items that must be carried: Spare lower unit or powerhead, sleeping bag, rations for 3, paddles, flares, first aid kit, lighter or waterproof matches on each person, and of course the rifle or shotgun and ammo, axe or hatchet.

There are some amazing stories to be heard. Speeds of up to 78 MPH have been reached, it's all about aerodynamics and lift, with a huge surface area/airtraps, and the cleaver providing tramson lift and helping keep the bow where it belongs.

    Happy Thanksgiving all!

        Waldport

        Dale,
Remember the race at Waldport OR, that on Sunday morning the water was real low on the small lake with a board dam and we almost didn't get to race. Ricky Montoya fessed up, let's hear your side of the story.

          Waldport?

          Hi Darrell-

I keep track of boat racing as best as I can, the internet helps a lot. I always knew you would be a great boat builder, I just didn't know you would take your craft this far! You were always talking with Joe Price I remember, learning, trying things, advancing the sport, kudos to you. Last I heard Joe was in the Seattle area, he was the man who made it all happen on our race team.

My Dad is living east of Salem several miles, he just turned 74 and is doing very well. My mom passed away in 2001. Mark is living on Bainbridge Island, he and his wife Elinor just had their second baby last week. I have a son 24 and daughter 23, both in Alaska. Kathy and I have been married since 76.

Waldport....... I guess the statute of limitations has passed. I do remember something about that, Darrell I think it was Beavers that almost got that race cancelled. I do remember Allen, Mark, and Maybe Tom Williams (???) and I having a little fun, some of them were in a small aluminum boat that had a gas tank in it a little ways off shore, we were shooting bottle rockets at them. A few landed in the boat, we quit when one hit the gas tank.

I have been trying to make Lawrence or D Lake for quite a few years unsuccessfully, in 2005 I am going to make a serious effort to make it, probably Lawrence. Dad is interested and I think I can bring him too.

I hope it is OK to get a little off topic here guys-sorry for writing a book. It would be great to catch up with some old friends, my Email is powellnospam@mosquitonet.com (remove nospam)

          And again-Happy Thanksgiving!

PS-Darrell, I want to talk with you about a boat project.

            Re-Read

I just did a search looking for a topic and ran across this old thread. Having run Top O' a couple of times a couple of posts in this thread literally had me laughing out loud with tears running down my cheeks. It's worth a (another) read.

Paradise Park When you are running 5 350H's side by side at the start of the race and the inside boat is 2 ft away from the inside starting line bouy and the outside boat is 2 ft from the shore in maybe about in a 1 ft of water and all 5 drivers could be holding hands that might be considered a short course

                    Tight Courses

We use to race with the IOA years back. Those courses they ran on the White & Wabash Rivers at places like Attica,Indy, Bedford were really small and tight. My kind of course, a real challenge to drive. Todays driver just won`t go to those places. And that is a shame because I bet they could be racing at some of these same locations.
