  • Expanding my boat racing horizons

After 40 years of driving boats on my knees, I finally either reached the age or the joint decrepitude to try something in a more prone position.

Last weekend I took the "Annabelle S", a Ron Jones vintage 280 for a spin on Lake Chelan.

Put simply, it was a hoot. A solid Plymouth 273 behind me, and a classic hull design made for one sweet ride.

    Enjoy the pics!

Nah....it's a fun place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. When I first got involved in outboards in the early 70's, the 280 class in the Northwest was amazing: 5 or 6 boats that were all top shelf, and every weekend a different boat was breaking the comp record.

Most of them were Jones cabovers, like the Bucaneer, Gladiator, Col Bogey, and such. I always thought as a kid that's what I'd want to race. So getting the chance to drive the type of boat I always lusted after was nearly as cool as the ride I got in the Bardahl 2 years ago. Another one off the Bucket List.

I had an opportunity to drive a 280 back in the 60's but had an outboard race the same weekend so I passed it up - I wish I had passed up the outboard race. Good for you Pat, it had to have been a great ride.
