  • How high will collectors go

Ok anyone who knows anything about Stock Outboard racing hulls will clearly see that this B&H is your run of the mill $400-$500 cash and carry boat. My point is how much will collectors pay just to have a Merc 25xs added to there already huge collection ? I dont want to offend anyone but why in the world would anyone pay the high dollar amount that these collectors pay just to have this stuff ? It must be like a sex or drinking addiction.

Let see I already have over 100 motors in the basement but I must have just one more!

    Get help guys !

      blows me away

      Hey Dan,,

What freaks me out is the thing sat at $2100 Buy it now for a couple days and that is a fairly decent price for a race ready 25 outfit. Nobody bought it and now it will probably hit 2300 to 2500.

        You think that's silly...

I do some competitive shooting and also collect firearms (hey, I've made money doing that, can't say the same about racing ). Have a look at http://www.scott-duff.com/RestorationParts.htm and scroll down to SA-139 and SA-140, of course the last complete rifle of that type I've seen for sale sold for between 30 and 40k. If you're into cars, look at the money a correct Hemi Cuda is bringing. Closer to home, how much is a converted 20H?

It's more like a disease Dan, you look at your collection and see what's missing or incorrect, not whats there

Dan, The winner will pay 2651.00! I put a much lower bid on this rig so we could keep it in racing for a new driver, but it still went too high. Hopefully the person that won it wont have to buy gears any time soon!

Competition isn't only on the water

What you see on Ebay sometimes is not sense but competition between bidders.
When you see this it is usually the newbie bidders that run the stuff up. Can't let the other guy beat me out. That is why slamming is really your only defense on Ebay.

I remember being interested in an incomplete mercotronic timing guage/dial indicator on Ebay. I bid maybe $25-30,,, Some guy ran it up to over $100. Since he was new to Ebay I emailed him and tried to offer some advice. He emails me back, verbally just rips the daylights out of me. Another bidder who "also just had to have" the incomplete item continues the bidding up to $182. I waited a few weeks to make sure the seller got his cash and then emailed the fool at told him where he could find a new and complete mercotronic guage for $106 including shipping.(politely of course)

                  Thank God, they don't race!

Did anyone else watch this week as an old steering bar for an "A" Merc went for $52.00!!!!!! Maybe it's about time to pull about twenty of those out of the back of the garage!!! Unbelievable

I am a former racer who is also a small time collector. I agree with most of what has been said about ebay. Many people think they have a huge treasure when it is very overpriced. A 20H did not sell recently for a huge price. Collectors are not all bad, but some think they just have to have a motor and are not discriminating enough to wait and look.
BTW the motors in my collection are all used and are not saw horse queens.

                        Virgin Mary Sandwich!

This story is true! Was in USA today newspaper.A woman listed a 10 year old grilled cheese sandwich which she had made and only ate part of it.She said she saw the face of the Virgin Mary staring back at her.She kepted it on her nite stand in a baggy for 10 years. She than decided to list this "Miracle" on E-BAY.It sold for over $16,000. People will buy anything if it has a story to it.She also noted that in 10 years it never grew moldy! That must make it a "Miracle"

No Eric, just puching holes in paper . But I do "run" several classes at the Nationals. They've added matches in the last couple of years, one for bolt action military rifles, the 1903 Springfield I shoot was made in 1937 and one for M1 Garands, the one I use in this was built in 1943. For the "serious" matches I have a rifle built around an AR-15 which if I do my job will punch 10 holes you can cover with a nickle at 100 yards.

                            Notice, it's Augustine blue
