  • Merc 44XS foot

I am trying to help out another friend that needs a part for there motor..They run DSH and are in drastic need of a gear foot for a Merc 44XS.The foot they have went balistic and is not good enough for scrap metal..If you have one you are willing to part with let me know as soon as possible..Our next and last race is the weekend of the 23 and 24 of September.

    Thanks

        Foot Repair

Doug Kay has repaired a number of my Quicksilver lower units. Here are some photos of a D foot repair. Doug's cell 586-212-5917. David and I have cones, bearing carriers, and water pump cartridges. Frank Erion has great gears. His number is269-720-1337.

              Alan,

Is that piece that you are putting in to replace the threaded section aluminum or stainless steel?

                Repairing a foot

The replacement item or insert is 6061T651. This is an aerospace grade alum. Doug heats the housing to about 400 degrees and freezes the insert. They are then slipped together and allowed to cool. The two items are machined so that the parts come back to temperature the insert is locked in. After that the housing is machined back to factory dimensions. Using alum allows for consistant properties for thermal expansion and keeps corrosion under control.

Just put a 55h under it. It is legal to do so this is what I run on my 44xs.

                    55-H foot

The 55-H foot will bolt up but remember the 44XS drive shaft is shorter than the 55-H shaft. You will have to change shafts to make it bolt up. You can also add material to get the 55-H skeg to be exactly like the 44-XS housing. I think Dave Scott did a couple that way. I don't think any other foot is legal in D stock.

                      44xs/55h

And Brians 44xs runs quite fine with that 55h gearfoot under it, I've watched it from behind.

The Bass 100T is legal under a 44xs mid section, if it has 1:1 gears.
I am told it is slower, though.
