Very well put! That used to be my motor and even I didn’t take that the wrong way. Alan was just trying to point out something that could potentially be an issue. Mike if Alan is right then I'm sorry, I've never heard about that rule and I will get you a new rope pull. I've been out of racing for a while too, and a little shocked at how quick people will go to shotgun blast someone. People like Mike, Teresa and though I have never met or even talked to Alan are the reason that Im racing again. They go out of their way to help someone.

Is it really necessary to be so harsh to the guy? I mean really, "Baseless charges"?

It's obvious that what he was saying was well intentioned, after all, he was congratulating a racer on a new motor. He meant no ill, and if he was incorrect, then a correction is in order, but it seems your goal is meant more to embarrass than to inform.

Here is a guy who came back to boat racing a couple of years ago after many years away, getting his son driving, buying new boats, props, restoring old racing motors, saving the history... And from what I see, a family that is having the time of their lives doing it. That's doing a whole lot more than most at trying to keep the spirit alive.

People like you ought to be the first ones to recognize that folks like Alan and his son are a rare part of a solution that boat racing is looking for. And if you can't be a little more generous to a man like that, then it really is no wonder why it isn't what it used to be.

      Boat Racing

Over the years that I have been involved with the sport my goal was to enjoy the sport, people and the joy of competing. My brother David and I started in the sport in 1955 when I bought a new 20-H and a Speedliner M-510. Over the years we have been building parts and the M-510 Speedliner which we are still making today. You can go to our website www.aeroliner-boats.com to get additional info. We both raced for years until family and work caused a lapse in our racing activities. About 6 years ago we started back in the sport. The most important thing we all can do is to make sure our sport is safe for all. When it comes to components that have a lot of stored energy you want to have the the best quality and a safe design. Going back in time (1970's) I remember when I had to buy a new Gentex life jacket that had a mandated insert that would protect a drivers back/spine from impact and flying parts. Still have the jacket and warranty paperwork. Today we have even better safety gear to protect us all.

The engine that Mike has just gotten is an exceptional MOD engine and it is done very well and its great to see new engines comming on line. Over the winter Doug Kay will be building two new 44 Mercs for me. One powerhead will be given to a racer who is helping to build the sport and keeping it alive. My intent is to help build racing back to a level where we don't have to talk about our sport going away. If we all work together we can make it grow and we can have years of enjoyment. Racing in both NBRA and APBA one key thing that is important to the clubs is the safety of the sport. We must remember that when we take a stock outboard that was designed to operate within the OEM's design limits and then modify that item to produce much greater power at very high RPM we have just eaten away some of the safety margin that was originally designed in to the components.

Thanks to all that express opinions on the website and share information. My background is in the aircraft industry where I spent 46 years in the engineering department of a large aerospace company. Safety is extreamly important in aerospace and I try to point out things that could cause an injury when I see them in our sport.

It was not my intent to cast any dispersion on any individual, just refute his statement that there was a problem with this Mercury part and that there was a specific a rule to ban it. He put the game in play by making the assertion without even checking the rules nor by being able to site one such part failing in the manner he imagines. Speculation is one thing but since this part has been used on stock and modified racing engines for approximately 25 years without a single failure, his speculation seems totally unjustified when compared to the facts. He has no failures to point to from field use and no data from any spin test induced failures to show that this is even conceivable at RPM levels that may be encountered during real use.

          Others have the same issue!

Greetings this is a good looking project !!!

i see 1 item you may wish to change , it is the rope pull this was an original mercury rope pull..
in more modern times they have been known to come apart and in some cases turn to flying shrapnel !!

you may wish to replace it as it will sooner or later come apart ..

i had 1 on 2006 it was all polished and pretty shined like a brand new Quarter and lasted 5 races before a chunk had come off and landed i know not where lolol

great looking engine i hope to see it run when ya get it done

          regard

It was a great suprise. Hopefully we will get to see what we can really do this weekend.

                          Nice present!

                          Hey Mike,
Congratulations on the great anniversary present. On our last anniversary, the only thing I got from my wife, that was boat racing related ,was a negative comment. I think the bar is set too high for some of us. LOL
