"The results from Hampton came in as 2 different races for the same class on the same day, it couldn't be scored that way.
To be able to score it we put all the racers from both summary sheets together as one race and put them in order of their total points. There is 2~1st and 2~4ths because there was a tie on total points for those 2 positions. No times were taken so there was no way to break the tie.
Hope this answers your question, if not let me know and I will try again to answer it in another way."
Okay racers......find that method of scoring a race in the handbook.
If it wasn't so sad this would be funny.
Fred
This is somewhat similar to the USTS races in instances where the field of boats is broken up due to numbers. Total points over 3 heats wins. If a problem was encountered with timing then it would be possible to have ties. Seems that the causes for running multiple races were different in this instance, but that the intent was well meaning.
...here is that 10 J's participated in a Region race. This is great!! The point stuff can be worked out in a civil and equitable manner. Our future lies with the fact that we can get 10 J's at a race with apparently 3 new drivers. Our future will have little to do with a snafu in scoring. Snafu's in scoring happen. Suggest that the frustration and anger over the scoring be redirected towards maintaining 10+ J's drivers at region events (that is where a successful future lies).
7. The race for each class shall consist of up to three (3) heats. The maximum number of boats competing in any heat shall be determined by the
Referee after consulting with the racing Commissioners present. In Junior Classes, the maximum number of boats allowed to participate in any closed
course heat shall not exceed twelve (12); this twelve (12) boat maximum does not apply to marathon races. Due consideration shall be given to safety at
the particular course. The maximum number of boats need not be the same for every class.
8. If the total number of entries exceeds the number determined to be safe for the race, this number shall be separated into elimination heats by
drawing lots. Secondary qualifying heat(s) may be run for all those entrants not previously qualified to fill the field to its announced maximum. In the
event a secondary qualifying heat is run, no points will be awarded for the secondary qualifying heat. When elimination heats do not result in a full
field for the final heat, the race committee shall fill the field by selecting additional boats in the following sequence:
A. Boats which finished an elimination heat but not high enough to qualify, in order of least recorded time.
B. All other boats that were entered in the race except those previously disqualified from the class.
C. If the boats in the last group (B) overfill the field, the exact number is to be selected by lot.

However, the above rule does not explain why there were (2) first place finishers, and (2) 4th place finishers.
I've been scoring for over 10 years, and learned from my grandmother (among many others) who scored for decades and NEVER scored a race the way described.

Sorry to hear that you guys are moving on. As passionate as you are about this, I'd much rather see you put that energy to helping doing things correctly at races. If you see something wrong, or perceived, bring it up right then. Mistakes are made, but we can't and shouldn't just let them slide.
Rightly or wrongly, we are an organization of volunteers. That isn't up for debate here. I referee, my wife scores, even our son who doesn't race works with us on the stand. It would be great to have more people step up and help keep things on the right track. I've not met you other than from some notes back and forth and photos you sent me of a very happy looking J driver, but I think you could be one of those people.

Fred,
I second Steve's response.
Mistakes are sometimes made and this is not one to switch gears over. I am somewhat involved in professional racing and see these kind of things on a regular basis.
You are an asset to region 4 and CVRA and we would hate to see you move on. I think Sam and Sarah would too.
Stay the course.
Hope Berwick is not out of the question. I can meet you near 295 & 64 on Friday if you want to send Sam with us.
Kurt
We appreciate the offer Kurt, but we're not racing outside CVRA sponsored events any longer. Good luck in Berwick and we'll see you in Tabor City!
Cheers,
Fred
Fred, This seems a bit extreme. Especially since the error made was probably inconsequential. Not to mention the fact that it was a mistake made on the part of that particular scoring crew, not any other club that you would be racing with. I would hate to see you and Sam miss out on the number of great races around our region because of one silly error. I agree that these things shouldn't happen, but the fact is they do. Errors are made every day in every way. Next year, it won't mean anything.
