I was growing through a used car sight and found this 1950s era hydro w/a mark 55h. Weird where some of this stuff ends up

That boat looks pretty advanced for 1951. I wonder if that is the correct year.

I really like the over the transom fuel tank vent.

I agree with Sam. I don't think that's a 1951 model boat. Look at the picture of the turn fin. Now look at the air trap. The boats that I've seen that were from the 50's didn't have air traps that looked like that.

That's exactly what I was looking at. It was my impression that air traps evolved during the mid and late 50's and did not automatically sprout on early 50's hydros. Thanks for confirming, David

I think the side turn fin is a later addition by someone who did not know it would not be period correct - its way off for a 1951 boat. The asking price is quite high, esp considering the 55H has no serial number plate. Like asking for a million for a Hemi 'Cuda convertible with no VIN, but the whole thing might lead to a sale as is where it is rather than on eBay or here.

The throttle hookup to the motor is not the type used on the 55h. It is one adapted from a standard Mk55.

It sure is. That would mean that it has std linkage inside the cowl rather than the H type actuator bracket.

How did I miss that! Sam is correct again. A sponson turn fin is not correct for that time period. They had them in the middle of the bottom back then. Also, the positioning of the turn fin is not correct. Even after they started putting the turn fins on the sponson the fins weren't that far out. They were about centerline of the sponson.

I may be wrong , but I think back to all the hydro's even from the late sixties to the early seventies and I seem to remember the cockpit sides were usually more open than the cut outs I see in the pic.

                  55h

Gotta get me one of them 75 hp. 1955 model 55H's... wait, the 55H was a '56 model. And, 1955's Mk 55 service motors had the 'fish' decal.

As for the horsepower, yeah, right. In your dreams.

The decals on the cowl are not from a 55H either.

you change your engine after every race season don't you

                      sam,

you change your race engine after every race season don't you? that's why we can't afford to race as much. the guy must have majored in fiction writing in college. isn't 6000 rpms a little low for the 55h? i seem to remember getting 8000 rpms on my 30h in the 70's.

We are going to the Gran Prix. I think the general number for the 55H is 7,000. Those little pistons in the 30's spin up easier.
