  • 302 cutting out

Bought a 302 new and ran it about 10 min and it ran good. Stopped and went again and it started cutting in and out not getting up to full speed, think one cylinders ignition is screwed up. Put a ohm meter on the plug wires and measured back, one reads infinity and the other reads 19 K ohms to ground. Any thoughts as to why. Tried a new set of plugs. It also cut out entirely once and started again but later lost all spark or so it seemed and was stone cold dead. Back at home it had spark and could jump a 3/8 inch gap on a tester. Somewhat of a gear head but unfamiliar with this engine, any thought would be appreciated.

    Thanx, Don

      Clean connectors

All of the components of this ignition system are connected with plug connectors. Go thru these. Unplug each one and make sure they are clean and then reconnect making sure they are completely together. Sounds like a poor connection.

          good question

Don't know, engine is new with electronic ignition, would think that the wires are not actual wire. When I put a meter on the plug wires back into the ignition system I did get a infinity reading on one and a 19K ohm reading on the other, after thinking about it and seeing the replys from other folks I think there is a partial ground there and it grounds out under load. Don't have the boat here but when I get back to it I guess I will just have to do the initial take this motor apart and see what is going on. Do appreciate the thought. Thanx, Don
