  • Top 'O Classics : THANKS

Thanks to the Top'O Michigan Outboard Racing Club and Commodore Dave Umbarger for hosting the Stock Classics at the Marathon Nationals again this year. I especially want to thank Mark Kurz for allowing so many of us racers to stage out of his Kamp Kurz for the entire weekend. Thanks, too, to Race Directors Tom Fairbairn and Don Voison, and to the announcer, John Broge for your continued support to the Stock Classic sub-division. We are a small but enthusiastic bunch of racers/former racers and racer wannabee's who love to run our rigs at the World's GREATEST Outboard Race. This year we had 7 entries, 1 Mark 15, 2 KG-7, 2 Mark20H, 1 25SS, and 1 Mark 55H. Just as important there were at least 2 former Classic drivers that "stepped" up to run the full Marathon this year. One of the 2011 Classic drivers is already making plans to step up next year in 2012!
    Thanks TOMORC! Mike Marshall Raceboat61-S

    Boat counts at Top 'O

It looks like my class (25SSR) and a couple others better recruit more members or we will be outnumbered by the classics! What a great problem to have. Lets keep encouraging these guys and see how many we can get to wind up running the full race every year. What a great hook to get them some experience and then into the full event.

See you all again next year. Remember that every Top 'O participant should have the goal to bring at least one new racer every year. With even a 25% success rate, we would be over 100 entries next year. I know that within Indiana Outboard Association, we have several good candidates. The classic thing may be just the taste of it they need.

Hi Steve. When I read Ron's ticket it said Mullet Lake at the mouth of the Crooked River. I think it has to be tossed by the judge due to to the fact there is no such location. How does Kyle's read?

        Ticket

The best I can read the light writing ours says "Burt lake/Indian River.

That must be the same spot we saw the jet skis jumping wakes right behind large pleasure boats. Somehow that isn't considered reckless while running the bouy marked course is. I guess that is why I am an engineer and not in law enforcement!

          More Thanks

I would like to add a big THANK YOU to the members of TOMORC for all their help running the Marathon. I have been away from racing for 32 years so I had a lot to catch up on. I have about 360 days to correct the mistakes I made and get ready for next years race. My family; most of whom had never been to a race, were impressed with the friendliness of the other racers and are anxious to return next year.

p.s. A special thanks to Don Voisin for the encouragement he gave all of us "Classic" drivers!

I would like to add my thanks to all of the above. This was my first TOPO and it was a ball despite the engine gremlins that plagued me. I will be back next year hopefully minus the gremlins.
