  • Asian carp

Maybe some of the drivers can wiegh in on the topic Wayne , but I am on the water all weekend and for the most part the carp dont bother the race boats. The patrol boats , mostly jonboats , and the diver - rescue boats seem to bother them more. If you idling in one of those boats it really seems to get them jumping. I can honestly say that during the actual races you dont see them that much jumping around the race boats. Like I said , maybe the drivers can add to this!!!!

    • Racingfan,
I just thought it was ironic because i have been seeing shows about these crazy fish on TV all the time. I just wonder if it will be a problem more in years to come as they mutliplie. For a driver there really isnt anything they can do if one decides to jump up in front of them. Its like in Thompson, CT when your in the patrol boat there are snapping turtles this size of gabage cans that come up for air, but I never seen a race boat actually hit one.

      • Asian Carp

These fish are in lake DePue in abundance. They have hit racing boats, but fortunately focus their wild leaps at patrol boats. Getting towed-in can be an adventure!! These fish are a nuisance. A packing facility is supposed to be under construction in Spring Valley to harvest these fish, prep them, flash freeze them and then ship them back to.... CHINA!!!

I know this isn't related to the thread topic but as I have been following it, I saw your statement of not having seen a raceboat hit one of the "Thompson turtles"!
Well I hit one at the start line in DMR at Thompson. Turtle was K.I.A. and so was my prop and foot.
Same year at Taunton I ran over Maloof's pitbull, he swam directly in front of me as was getting on plane. Dog survived ended up with tons of stiches,

          Love this Pro trivia thread
          back to Wakefield now

          • The 350ccH that had boat damage was F6 of David Mitchell. He eventually won, but between heats, the had to put a patch on the top deck of the sponson.

            • None floating

I was thinking today - you dont see any dead asian carp floating when the races are going on. If they were bothering the race boats or getting hit by props you would think there would be alot floating in the lake. I can attest to the patrol boats as I took one off the side of my head Saturday. I had just got a Mens Club nationals hat and after washing it twice it is still stained. They are extremely slimmy and can get quite large. On the Illinois River near Starved Rock a few weeks ago there was an asian carp round-up which netted 46,000 yes 46,000lbs and the largest one was around 50lbs.

              • early DePue Nationals years

Before I do the DePue questions for this year , I am looking for some verification. Looking thru old posts on hydroracer and boatracingfacts , the best time frame I can come up with for the first consecutive Nationals run on Lake DePue was from 1965 to 1974. Can anybody verify these years ?

One other question for some of our elder statesmen. In 1971 there is 2 champions listed for the c service class. It says C Service Hydro I and C Service Hydro II and C Service Runabout I and C Service Runabout II. Why the 2 listing for the same class ?

                Thanks for your help.

The reason was that the OMC motors ran one c class and the Merc ran the other. Don't remember which was which but I think C1 was the mercs and C2 was OMC. Steve

                  • Thanks Steve - was this just a one year thing because 1971 was the only year it was listed like that.

                    • After That, The Commission "Kicked" The Mercury Out

I think, the "PRO" Commission decided that by "Kicking" the Mercury out, the sport would GROW!

                      • Was one faster than the other and is that why the Merc was eliminated

                        • C service Mercurys

The 4 cylinder C Service Mercurys ran nitro and were faster than the OMC motors, that is why they seperated them. They did not have enough of them to keep the class going on their own.

                          • Thanks Rex - So was this just a one year deal where the gave out 2 Nationals in C Service Hydro and Runabout. 1971 is the only year listed as having 2 in each class.

It was around for a few years just can't say how many. The Mercs that were run were the two cylinder type not four cylinder to best of my memory. Thirlby's still have theirs and maybe Chris Hellsten has his dad's yet. Larry Latta's is out there somewhere as others. I even think Brinkman had one as well. Think Todd even won some championships with it. Steve

Duke Johnson won CserR at Tracy, Quebec in 1982 Canadian Nationals with Red Taylers 2 Cyl. I'm glad we are running Evinrude and Johnson's today. Dad still has that motor & others.
