  • 25XS Unrestricted

I'm told that there was some discussion recently concerning the 25 XS and an initative to run this engine in APBA without the restricter plate. I ran the 25XS in the other organization for about 6 years unrestricted and found it to be about the same on top end but much more responsive in the turns and considerably more in the acceleration area. I would highly recommend that it be given a try. We need to keep this good engine in the mix and keep it competative. An easy fix!

    Whatever flyboy!

    I've said that since 1992
remove that silly plate and that motor is fun to drive, and will haul us "full figured" guys around much better. Thats why the class is un - popular and I think that the main reson for the down swing in many classes , they ain't no fun.

Do it. Build a list here of 25xs drivers who agree.

ok where are all you mercury guys? Here is where you can voice an opinion on what you think will work. I just got finished testing all the Yamato 25ssr senerios. We tried More restritor (20ss 7/16) we tried different hieghts. I will be submitting this data to the SO commision. Hopefully the Merc teams will have some feedback to share with the SO commision before we get to Atlanta.

            No Restricter

Let the engine breathe after all this is Stock Outboard Racing, why not get the best performance out of a stock engine. I have yet to see a 25 HP merc on a fishing boat with a restricter plate in it. I vote no restricter

              data?

              Hi Mike Ross,

Would you be able to post the data here to give everyone a chance to see it before the meeting? Would give us a chance to dissect and discuss before hand.

So did this data come from your test day at Grass Lake that you talked about? Great to see someone follow thru.

Bill I will be posting this info soon. I am going to Sanduskey this weekend and will be reviewing this info with all the region 6 people. I talked with Dean and he is also looking for some feedback from the Mercury teams. We need to see how there testing results faired. With and without restrictor for the SO commision to review. As it stands we need this data to make a good desision on what we should change for next year. As I stated in a older post I think we have pretty equal pairity right now based on the racing that accurred last year. Rodes and Ross looked to be pretty equal at the nationals and also grass lake. So if the Merc teams want to review this issue I would incourage them to get this info to the commision. It will be hard for the commision to make a desision if they have no input from the mercury teams. Thanks to all the prior posts from the Mercury guys. If you have any speed rpm data that could be shared this is what the commision needs. SEE YA SOON Mike

My only concern with changing the prop height requirement in 25SSR for the Yamato is we need to change it to the same thing for CSR if we change it for 25SSR. Sometimes at the races we barely have time to add the restrictor and take out the weight. We would never have time to change the prop height. Most of us run multiply classes and they are always some of the classes that run between CSR and 25SSR. Maybe we should change both classes (CSR and 25SSR) to 1 3/8" prop height.
The only problem with removing the restrictor plate for the Merc is it leaves the Hot Rod behind and with all the work being done on Hot Rods at this time, that would be a shame.

                    yamato height

I guess I missed something (not too hard for me to do) I thought the discussion centered on whether to remove the restrictor in the mercs to achieve parity with other moters in 25ssr. I agree though that if the height is changed for 25 it should also be changed for csr as Bob said.

                      Gents,
I race 25SSH and 25SSR with Merc 25XS here in Region 6. I vote to remove the restrictor in the Mercs. I can't be at the meeting in Sandusky this weekend so I'd like someone to take my 'proxy' to that meeting. I'd like to add that while it hasn't been mentioned on this thread or any others to my knowledge, I hope that the restrictor will also be removed for the 25SSH as well. Don't want another task to try to get done between heats/races. If it's good for runabouts it will be good for hydro's . Mike Marshall, Raceboat61-S

                        yamato height redux

A careful re reading of Mike Ross' post #5 showed me where the idea of maybe changing the Yamato height came from. Of course I don't know what Mike found with his testing but I do know that my restricted Yamato is really a dog in the turns at the present height. If we had to drop to one and three eights it would be down right uninteresting to drive and might result in other Yamato drivers bolting from the ranks of 25ssr due to extreme boredom. That would be tough on the 25 class as a whole.

25 xs plate or not to plate

I enjoy the 25xs in AOF without a plate, hopefully APBA will allow the change. We had to have the plates made as there are none avaiable from Mercury. How about a comparison between a 102-302 and a 25 (plateless)?.

                            No restrictor

I was told that the reason for the plate being installed originally was based on boat size and safety. 25XS on a 25SS boat = good ride. apparantly merc didn't think so. There is no need for the restrictor these days and it should be removed. The plate is "NLA" from merc and it makes for one less thing to inspect. As mentioned above, it would allow AOF motors to be APBA legal. After all, aren't we trying to get more people out there racing?

The pulling of the restrictor plate in the 25xs has been an issue almost every other national meeting as far back as I can remember. For one more time, "please listen SORC, remove the restrictor plate". Do you see anyone fighting to keep it? No, never! Have some sack and let us pull it out in both classes.
