      Wood Guess

This is purely a guess, but the framing is typically Sitka Spruce in these boats. However, many have used Obeeche, Popular (yours does not look like popular), clear pine. I have seen butternut used too.

For the decking, most use Okume plywood, of the better grade. It is availabe in millimeters and also inches. Typically a deck is 3mm Okume. If you are matching exactly the thickness, it will be tuff. You could pick up a sheet of 1/8" Okumme and give it a whirl.

Okumme can be found at a lot of larger lumber stores. Menards and Lowes do not carry it to my knowledge. You need more if a specialty lumber store that typically only sells wood.

Harbor Marine Sales is a big name boat builders buy from, they are on the east coast and can deliver anywhere. Not the cheapest by any means, but it is usally good wood.

Noahs out of Canada is a great source as well, and is usually a lot cheaper than Harbor.

If you run out of options for suppliers on these woods, try this:

Use a clear pine board, 3/4 thick by however long. you can buy at Lowes or Menards. Rip to the 3/4 x 3/4 dimension of the stringers, or what ever dimension you need.

Plywood - I have seen door skins used as well for the decking. But if you plan to paint the boat you could use some nice birch you can find at Lowes in 1/8" thick. Remember to seal off with good Epoxy both sides.

Hope this helps, and good luck on your project !

I concur with Dave about Sitka & Okoume being likely & look those colors. I would be sure to get the better quality 3mm & thorougly epoxy it into clean dry bare wood. Harbor might not deal in plywood anymore[?] but there's other choices. Good Luck.

Maybe its just the cross frames being close together but it looks like a very long boat.

I was planning the lexan cowl, mohagany would be better...does anyone sell these parts or have a template to get me close?
Not mine looking at the structure. Cockpit floor on my boats had lots of small section stringers, like 5/8 square or even 1/2 x 5/8 on B & A boats. This one looks like the builder used 1x2s.

This boat is 9' 9" from very tip of sponson to the transom. framing and cross braces are 1/2"x1" (nose cross is a piece of pine 1" x 1.5" and is being replaced when I purchase some spruce...bottom is 1/4" and decking is 5/32".

anyone have a basic template for the front cowl piec I can trace to get me started? I made a couple out of cardboard, but they are not 100% correct yet.

              thanks guys!

Your on the right track making cardboard mock ups. One thing Id advise is it not protrude very much past the dash especially if you use wood [breaks easy working on it] & for safety [leaving a smaller edge]. Once your close to what looks right you could trace the cardboard onto some thin plastic sheet & work with blue tape so you get the exact final form, mark it out on the deck while taped down then trace it onto wood, lexan or whatever you want to use. Good Luck.

One more thing, to be sure your final pattern is symetric you can trace it on a flat surface then flip the pattern to see if its the same both ways.

Thanks Mike...those are some good ideas, once I am close on that cowling/fairing pattern I will trace onto posterboard and fold like you mentioned, then make final adjustments. i know its a fairly simple project, I just haven't ever played with a wood boat and I want to do a nice job.

                      Suggestion

The NBRA is sanctioning a race in Rockaway Beach MO June 3 - 5. How about you bring that thing over and get some experience in it ? If you don't get it done, and need some help, I will be glad to look at it there and offer up any help I can. I plan to be in Rockaway Beach Friday morning should all go well.

Hi dave...I have wanted to go to the races at rockaway for quite a while now, but we host an AOMCI meet usually on the same weekend, this year is the same. I do have the Garnett, KS race on my schedule and plan to come down there.
