  • Another Sad Day - Doug Parker

Looks like this has been a very tough week for all and especially today for myself and Region 1. My father, Doug Parker passed away last night after a long hard battle with cancer at the age of 82. Dad was one of the founding fathers of Westbrook Outboard Assn. in Maine back in 1959 were he was President for many years. Along with supporting myself and my brother in the J class, he also ran AU,BU,ASH,BSH and CSH every weekend.
His last race attendance was at Watchic Lake in 2009. When he attended my 50th year of racing where it had all started for me. He was instrumental in establishing the very first race at Watchic Lake in 1959 as Westbrook Outboard's first race. Services will be held at Dolbys Funeral Home in Windham, Maine later this week.

    Greetings Dan,

It's been a rough week on all of the boat racing family.

As a former Commodore of Westbrook Outboard myself, as you were too, I know what a contribution your Dad made to promote racing here in Maine.

I extend our sympathies, to you and the family, Dan , BUT, remember, all of the better moments, don't dwell long on the bad , Know that He's in a much better place.

Hope to see ya this summer some where.....

Dan, I'm so sorry to hear of your father's passing. It's hard to belive that it has been a year since we made the trip up there to see him. I'm sincerely glad that you included me in that trip. It's been a tough year for him. What a loss! I'm a better person from having known Doug Parker. May he rest in peace. Jack

Sympathies to the Parker family. I can remember them as a solid fixture around Region 1 when I was growing up.

As said Dan, remember the good times and understand the suffering has now gone. Best wishes.

Dan I never met your Dad but I knew he was very active in boat racing as you were. The McAfee race team will be thinking of you and your family. I know you have good memories with your Dad to think back on.

My introduction to boat racing as a 'newbie' starting out in D hydro with a flighty Sid Craft got me acquainted with Doug. He was right there at Tacoma Lake. my first race, when I did a lift-off and barrel roll entering the second lap. In fact, seems like Doug and everybody else was there hauling me and the boat out and asking me if I was alright... probably wondering if I was nuts, etc. Lack of sanity was confirmed, so they helped me throw on my spare mag and get me going for the second heat. My association with Westbrook Outboard only lasted til 65' when Big Uncle sent my worthlessass to SEA, but my memories of Doug and Westbrook Outboard remain. It was great to see him at Standish. We are fortunate in that we do have a lot of people who share his gift of enthusiasm within our little world of outboard racing up here in New England. Peace be with you Doug.
