  • Cougar Cub Rigging

I dont know if this is the right section but I was wondering if any of you can give me some tips on rigging my cougar cub which is a 10ft catamaran for those who havn't heard of them. I have a 70s mercury 40hp short shaft with the thunderbolt ignition (the all black motor with blue graphics) in like mint condition that I picked up for it. I was wondering how much I should jack it up on the transom, what kind of prop to run, the trim and any thing else i should do to give it the best top end speed. I just did a complete restoration on the boat and added a ring frame to the back of the liner with a carbon fiber knee back that comes off of the transom too for extra support for the motor.

    Thanks

I rigged 4 of these at Betty Cooks KAAMA Marine (KS&W) in St Augustine, FL in the early 80's.

The hull is rated at 15 HP and there is no way you could convince me to put anything larger than a 25 HP on it.

At speeds over 25 MPH the hull is prone to rolling. Over 30MPH you basically can only go in a straight line as long as your in flat calm water.

Looks cool, but a very flawed design.

I had a former APBA "Cub" when I first started race'n in 1999.......I had the 25XD and was a blast to run......At the time I had a house on a 10HP lake and had 9.8 decals on it.......(CHEETER!!!!)..........Anyway, it was a ton of fun and wish I had kept it............At that time I did not Know about race set up and did not try raizing it higher on trans........Did play with kick-out and it depend'd on the ride you want'd when play'n with the kick.....parrallel and tuck gave a good ride and easy to plane.....kick'd out for speed........Never had a flip issue with mine in three years play....but I was runn'n with old hydros with 10HP Hurricanes and 20H's
Eventually someone didn't like me have'n too much fun and one morning I saw the Fish-Fuzz (Pa. Fish Commission) take'n pictures of my motor and look'n for a serial plae.....Pull'd the rig and put my 9.8 off my pondtoon boat on it....never got on plane again....Sold on E-Bay to Erick Engler and Hauled to his place in Connecticut.......Was not able to consumate deal and hauled back to Erie , Pa.....relisted and it now resides in Georgia.

Have fun and keep us posted....Pics?

Yea I have always heard once you go past 25 if you turn your rolling and there very sketchy to drive, but how fast you think it will really go with the proper set up with the 40? and how about some pics of your cubs to heres mine from the beginning to now. I removed all 5 deck plates, new dash and filled the old holes and a ton of glass work in the hull along with all new wood.

There is an early and late model Merc Cub....early is basically a 23 to 12 degree bottom with a single step very shallow double chine.

Late models have 8-10 lifting rails both on the bottom and chine, tail to nose.

Early models were just plain hairy to drive. Later models with lifting rails were better but still unstable at speeds over 25MPH+.

As I remember there was a celebrity driver event in Key West in 82 or 83 the Offshore people sponsored that had 6 of these and none finished.

Sweet.........I would guess mine ran about 40 with the 25XD........How you position yourself will affect ride and steer'n......I could go out at sun up with my Irish coffee as da only rig on da lake, and sit on edge and actually "FLY" one hull.......Was a great chick magnet especially when the "RED-NECK" yaught club was a few hours into it and time for beer/drink/potty runs!!!!!!!!

Drove like a go-Kart on water.....added fixed trim tabs on back and NEVER had a issue.

Mine was white with red white and blue stripes....Never did take pics of it.....sad....

            PS-BW,...Wow,....and I'm called.......... fer spread'n...... "Negativity"?

Thats the early model......and that is alot of work you did.

And seriously, the 40 is waaaaaay too much motor for this boat.

I have seen a few people run 35s and even a 50 without any problems but since I already have the motor I want to at least run it once on a really calm day out in a lake or canal. Then if its to much down grade.
