  • D Class "Fun Run" boat???

I was looking at purchasing some Sorensen plans to built a boat or two just run up the river a few times during the summer. In trying to find a suitable power plant, I was told that a 50hp Tohatsu with a racing lower unit would be the ticket, for racing... Are there any outboards that I could put on this hydro without being a racing association member or having to buy a new lower unit? Just a stock engine that will work?

    Please let me know.
    Thank you.

    Power

If you are building a "D" size boat you would be fine with the Tohatsu on it with the stock gearbox. You may have to modify the transom some to accept the engine. I would suspect speeds to be around 50MPH with this in stock form.

If you want safe and cheap buy a racing engine called a 302 Yamato. They are race ready at around $2000.00. That is pretty cheap compared to buying a used fishing engine in great shape ready to roll. Unless of course you have some connections and a handy hand.

Be creative and make what you want. If you did buy the Yamato you could at any time prolly race it for fun at a local race. You never know, you might like it ! The only drawback to the Yamato in your application is the water to cool the engine is force fed, meaning you can't put around. You would need to be on plane all the time.

For a D sized boat think around 50HP. That will be the limit of your boat.

      Motor

The Yamato will cool while putting around at least on a runabout. I think what he is saying is that Yamato's and the Tohatsu's are only supposed to be sold to racers i.e. members of APBA etc and not for pleasure use. My Yamato however has seen a few miles on local lakes and the delta and will pump water in 5 mph zones.

In another thread there are a couple of 55H's and a 58H for sale. One of these would make a good motor for that boat. Also will not lose any value as time goes on if taken care of.

        Thanks guys!

Can you PM me any links you may have to dealers of Tohatsu or Yamato engines (some people don't like to throw out names in public)?

Also, when I am looking for a suitable engine, what should I be looking for?

        Thanks again.

Ric Montoya for the Yamato. Second ad down on the Portal Page. Bass brothers for the Tohatsu, they have an ad on the Portal Page as well. All good people to work with.

The Bass/Tohatsu M50D2 is not E.P.A. emissions legal. The engine is imported with an E.P.A. waiver stipulating that the engine is to be used for racing only. This is why Bass Machines requires racing credentials prior to selling the engine to anyone. This is also why each engine is clearly labeled "For racing only." Don't blame Bass Machines, blame the E.P.A.

That is true to buy a Yamato or Tohatsu you must show proof of being with NBRA, AOF or APBA and sign a statement that you will be racing. I just did it a year ago.

All new racing engines are EPA restricted

And Sidewinder. Best to buy something without the restrictions and do some modifying work to add a racing lower unit.
