  • Wakefield Tales of Yore

For the 2011 Wakefield Nationals we are planning on playing a little trivia game. Since it's the off season, the National Meeting is over, and the Winter Nationals are still a month away, I thought this would be a superb time to gather trivia. This will be a contest, so PLEASE DO NOT POST STORIES ON THIS THREAD. Rather, PM me or send them to me at: spunky64w@gmail.com

I'm looking for social trivia as well as championship trivia. Please keep all social trivia fun. (Not "so and so puked the most this year.") Social trivia should be stories about someone's kids tearing up the pool room at Indian Head, getting a car stuck vertically in the mud, tipping a boat over by trying to undo the reeds on the propeller, or something like that. Championship trivia would be best if you know someone who won a nationals out of the blue or in a bizarre kind of way. For instance, with half the boat held together with duct tape and deck screws. Please name names, and the years also. Or, if you know of any other kind of fun facts, I would welcome those also.

REMEMBER! This is a contest so e-mail or PM me with the stories. You can post up that you sent me something, but it defeats the purpose if the answers are up where all may see.

I haven't gotten ANY stories yet. I don't believe this. There are excellent tales to be told. Just think of your favorite Wakefield memory and pass it on!

    Spunky64w@gmail.com or PM me.

    Please and Thank you!

My Wakefield memories were from 1980 & 1982.

That first year (1980) I was pitting across from the 3rd&4th turn along the road. I had the Listers and John Karelson on my right and Jim McDonough on my left.
1.) I was fastest qualifier in ASR that year. Wayne Seeberg finished second in my elimination race and also nailed down 3rd fastest quailfier. We had a fast heat!
2.) I also qualified in 25ssR with a second in my elimination heat (Craig Bowman won that heat). I found Bob Martin who had about 12 propellers that he would let me try for my 25ssR. During "qualifier's testing" I tried them all! Some I only went 50 yards and I knew that they weren't good! I settled on two that I made a lap with. They were both good props, but one made the boat run loose, while the other dropped the nose and just pushed... I ran the pusher in the finals. I won the first heat but jumped the gun by a mear foot! I remember hoping to beat them the the first turn.... then hoping for the next turn... then a lap. I finally realized that they weren't going to pass me! It was David Dewald on my inside and Chris White on my outside! It was great!
3.) The last memory was Tommy Good getting badly hurt in BSH. I took his wallet to the hospital, picked up his racing gear in the hallway of the hospital and brought it all back. He spent some time in that hospital and then was moved to a hospital in Wisconsin and then moved again to Massachusetts General Hospital. He was tied up for months....

In 1982, I was pitted across from the judge's stand along the road. I was pitted next to the Steve & Paula Wilde and Wayne Seeberg. I was the 3rd fastest qualifier that year in ASR. The weather got bad and the finals were phosponed until we never had them! I was all set to win this time!
