  • Classics at 2011 Top'O

At the last TOMORC meeting, after much discussion, and a vote, it was agreed to place 'Classics' on the sanction for Top of Michigan Outbard Marathon Nationals, August 13th & 14th, 2011.
Most of the discussion was about timing/safety issues, fitting them into the alloted time, not interfering or endangering the J's, and participation numbers. We have not had the numbers that we had hoped for.
I would like to point out that a majority of club members attending the meeting want classics to participate, and believe that if we stick with it for another year or two, that the numbers, hopefully, will be good enough to validate the extra effort put forth by the club.
This is were you ALL come into the equation. If you have ever thought an abbreviated Top'O course, run using a 'classic' engine and maybe boat, would be on your bucket list, I would strongly suggest that you start putting your plans in order for August 13th & 14th. We need you to help make 'Classics' a reality for the future.
I've been asked to remind potential classic racers that as it is not a national championship, (for classics), that a single day, (in this case 'event'), membership can be purchased for the weekend. Also, all safety requirements, such as helment, kevlar, kill switch requirements must be met.
Thanks to all, please start spreading the word about 'classics' at Top'o for 2011, we definitely need the numbers to improve to keep the events addition to Top'O. I, personally will not be satisfied til' I hear multiple converted 20-H's wraaaaping it up by Thursday's test session at KampKurz.
Maybe we can hear from pontential classic racers to get some idea about who might want to articipate in this one-of-kind event. Think Classics. Thank You! KampKurz

    Yea, like this!

I'm think around ten of these would do nicely. Oh, A's, C's and D's too!!

I will be there running my old "B" Sidcraft and converted 20H, my son is going to drive my
Dad's "D" Sid in the clasics that I ran up there in 05,09 & 2010 in the full marathon, only it will have my Dad's original 55H on it. I will round up as many old Lakeport Boat Club members as I can find to run in the clasics this year. I want to know where Kampkurz is so we can test on Thursday.

            I've Never Been To "TOP"....

But I talked to Max McPeek the other day, he's a pasted winner in AU. Max has not been to a boat race since the KG-4 got dropped as an APBA class.

At this time, I would be interested in running this race in something CLASSIC, but really would not to race.....Maybe offering a participant award for Classic would be better than winning...type prizes...as I'd assume most Classic racedrs are at least as old as I am, and I'm 66, 67 in April! Can I run Classic C Hydro? (With a MArk 30-H of course!).

Thanks to TOMORC and especially Dave Umbarger and Mark Kurz for their support in continuing the running of the classics. I'll be there with 2 "classics", a 20H on my 65' Rinker, and a KG-4 on a Racecraft. Also, my grandson will run in the J class in his first Top "O. See you at KampKurz ! Mike Raceboat 61-S

Bring those Lakeport boys on up. KampKurz is a couple miles north of Indian River, on Burt Lake's east shore. We'll make sure you get there when the time comes. KampKurz

As a teen. I hitch-hiked up to Hobart's on Mullet, where I met Max McPeek, he dominated A, and yes, there was a KG-4 on his boat.
I think the spirit of the classic involvement at Top of Michigan is to include the 'racer' that wants to be involved in one of the last, coolest, races, to do so, and participation is the award. I agree, maybe we will award on participation, as we have for years, by making sure each driver competing two days gets an award.
Classic C hydro?? We'll have to check to see if people entertaining insane thougthts will be allowed. KampKurz

I have participated in the Classic Top O' the last two years, but I will not be participating in it in 2011...Instead, I will be running the full Top O' course for the first time. Thanks for having the classic as it was a great way to introduce me to the sport and the race. I really hope you are able to keep it going. I'll see if my Dad would be interested in running the classic, provided we can get/keep our 20H running.

                          Gents,
As I recall, the only 55H entered in the "Classics" in 2010 never got off the beach on Sunday? Electrical problem, I think, only 2 cylinders firing and couldn't plane off? Mike

A great reason for having Classics at Top 'O

I raced in the late 70's against Max at the marathon he was runnin' with the C's when I saw him would be great to have him show up and show the boys what a real A runs like
