    Earl,

My 44XS was built by Dave Scott. I am not sure of the
original production years for a Mercury built motor. My
guess, from the dates in my Mercury Service Manual,
would be mid 1980's to mid 1990's?

My $0.02 untill someone with the right answer responds.

    Merry Christmas,

    Doug Follett 87-P

Your question was about Mercury "D" class legal motors. According to the 2011 inspection manual just out the 40 cubic inch (55H) the 44 cubic inch block produced prior to 1968 and of coarse the 44XS Merc. are all legal class "D" motors.

1968 Mercs start with serial number 2305101 ... so if you are building up an old 44 for D Stock you want one with an earlier serial number
