I noticed a very small hole on the left side of the gearcase in the
center of the top half and oil is barely weeping out of it. Is this
hole supposed to be here and what is it for, breather? thanks

Fishing or racing gearcase?

There is a grove machined into the adapter plate between the gear foot that lets water and oil out.

This is a small hole a couple inches above where the gear case is split. This is
the racing unit.

That would be up where it was stock, in the tower? There are various weep holes to let water out & prevent freezing. Sometimes they would also seep oil residue from the exhaust especially if run rich.
