I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man
standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle. -- Winston Churchill
Dick O'Dea was always a winner. I remember when he would come up to the Lowell, MA race once in a while (probably a N.E. Divisionals) through the 60's. As a kid, I remember that he had a jacket with the US shields down each sleeve! I was so in awe of what that jacket represented.... I never thought that I would ever win one of those awards, forget a whole jacket full! Eventually, some 10-15 years later, I won a Natl High Point in ASR. It was my first "National" award. I did it with an engine that I built - it had alot of prep work done by both Bob Thornton and Dick! Ironic that this first award was with the help of Dick O'Dea!
It's amazing what Dick has done over the years. Reviewing his awards, I can atest to him winning the silver "Woolworth Cup" as I was there as a J driver at the Winthrop, Maine Regatta where the Woolworth Cup was held each year until it was finally retired. It literally brought drivers from everywhere for the "Free-for All competition" the likes I've not seen since.
I was so impressed with Dick, I remember bugging him with questions about his alky equipment , I couldn't believe that he took the time to answer all my question throughly explaining everything. He made me feel just as important as anyone else. As a kid, he made such an impression on me, class act all the way.
I wonder just how many people know who actually retired the Woolworth trophy and when which I believe is displayed now at APBA.
