  • yamato lower

Just took possession of a yamato 302 foot, or lower unit. It has 64 stamped on the side. Yamato's are new to me so bare with me. What weight oil do these units use, and how is it filled and drained. there aren't any plugs in it like i'm use to.

Look in the top you will see the cast-in boss for the not drilled oil level plug. dump old oil out, fill to boss. As for what to use... gear oil, change often, like in every weekend. Then hold the throttle wide open until in front.
And above all have fun. 50-R

That is correct. Much nicer then the 80. Use 90 weight gear oil. Make a few extra gaskets for the foot just in case. The number on the foot is an Id number for when they were raced or shipped from Japan, not sure which.

Apache, we exchanged emails a couple of months ago, you're in upper NY.

Toronto Outboard Racing Club is holding Annual General Meeting this Saturday, 9am, Toronto. I know it's a haul for you, but we'd be pleased if you can attend, many members are coming out(20+). We can answer MANY q's, provide tips on the 302(I have one), your rig, set-up, what we did for 2010, what we're planning for 2011, detail the opportunities TORC has ahead for growth, different classes, new race sites. Our Waterford, and Dunnville race sites in S Ontario are 2+hrs fr Rchstr. The US/C $'s are at par, spend Friday night in Toronto, join us Sat. Several TORC members live in NY/OH/NH(yes!), and race w us regularly. If interested, I can provide coordinates.

Bravely ask q's on HR, many generous racers w great advice to get on H2O. Much easier to get going w proper guidance.
Feel free to email/call me directly with 302/race q's, my gearfoot same as yours.

PS: use 12mm wrench, undo the gearfoot 2 nuts above cavtn plate, drop it down, remove gasket. Per Pro-MO above pour out old, pour in new(I use Amsoil 90 gear oil) up to boss, bolt it back up. Given it only takes a cup, definitely worth changing after weekend of racing. Cheers!
        PPS: Beer at our AGM!!!

Thanks to all. I never thought about plugs in the top. I'm used to those 2.5 and 3.0 liter merc cases with visible plugs. I'd love nothing better than a trip to toronto. However, my wife has decided we need a big boat ride to best celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. i can't very well refuse for many reasons not the least of which is her letting do things like run hydroplanes in my old age.
