Lots of stuff happening. New motors coming in, old motors being phased out. Lots of stuff to think about. I was just hoping to promote my little corner of the sport by offering my help to anyone interested in racing 350ccmh (aka "B" mod). When I first became interested in BMH it was a fairly large class and nowadays we take it places and there are only a few if any at all. I have never known motors to evaporate so they must still be out there somewhere. If you have one and share similar concerns about being the only one that shows up to a race site feel free to contact me and if there is any way that we can make it to the site, we will come and put boats in the field. I refuse to try to promote a class by complaining about it, whining, or throwing stones at other classes. I hope to get back in a boat next season and it would be nice to race against a few more boats. So if you are sitting on a burned up motor or just have an Y80 that you might be inclined to do something kind of cool with, "B" mod is a great ride.

Bmod
I got a nice fresh Goller crank... Goller elbow and a pile ofGoller pipe plans, Fresh Tj sleeved cylinders . Parker down housing and a box of stuff to assemble. I might need a head... Thinkin about dusting off the MJR Plans and puttin some okume and sitka back on the jig , which will be my third boat built. To play with my I.O.A. pals for a few races next year...

Sonny,
Up in Taunton 2 weeks ago me and Goller were talking about the BMH & CMH. Where are they? He is bummed out also. He has built so many over the years and they just stopped coming. Here was Tauntons CMH race.. 2 Mercs, 1 BMH ( Paul S ) and 1 Hotrod B. Maybe we can get a email listing of all the guys that own them and find out why there not racing?sigpicWayne DiGiacomo

Wayne That sounds like a very good idea.
we should all go through our club lists and contact anyone not racing any more. We may very well not convince them to race again. but the data as to WHY could be very valuable.

Here's what I'm seeing
I've tried to purchase (2) different CMOD motors over the past few months. Motors that are not actively raced. Guys simply want premium dollars for them. I can't say I blame them it's not my money. As much as I'd love to put another rig on the water I'm not willing to break the bank in these economic times. Financially it's a great risk for me especially when you consider recent boat counts.

Troy,
Agree 100% on this. Thus the reason I dont know what to do. B-mod-Cmod, either one, The guys that own them other then Clark/Jennings/Sonny (Yamatos) are the only garuanteed guys that will be there. Cant see spending the money and racing a mixed class or not racing at all after driving somewere. Its to the point now where they are not even being put on the schedules (Haverhill, Kingston).sigpicWayne DiGiacomo

Strong in R6
Sonny,
BMH is usually a pretty strong clas here in R6. IOA usually has plenty. CMH is one of the largest mod classes around. There is no shortage of these. It must be a local problem if there is in your area.
I can't speak to the west coast, but it seems like there were plenty out there as well. Without a lot of midwest and east coast support they had good numbers at the Nat's.
You can still buy a new 302 and bolt the pipe on.
As for the Yamato 80.. it will die evnentually, you can't run down to Napa and buy parts, the salvage yards don't know what the hell it is let alone have parts and junkers laying around. It should have died in stock a long time ago, I think the last prodution dates were in the 60's ? Talk about keeping around old stuff !! No offense to those that run this engine. I just think it is amazing y'all have kept it going for 40 years.
Just saw on John Runnes post that the 20SS engine was stoppedproduction in 1979. Still impressive on how long you guys have kept it going though.Last edited by Dave M; 09-23-2010, 09:43 AM.Dave Mason

It is true that the 80 is old and will eventually become antiquated as far as stock outboard racing is concerned. BUT!! The 80 is standing on solid ground in mod. Here is some food for thought, The 80 does not require a filler block like most modified outboards it is already done for you, Pyramid reeds, You cant add or remove any material so you don't have to ruin the motor to race it in mod, remote water pickups are available so you don't have to modify your gearfoot at all unless you want to, and more times than not..a decent "C" stock boat makes a decent "B" mod boat, "C" stock of coarse being the largest class boats are not hard to find if you don't already have an extra one hanging around. And truth be told, there is only 1 or 2 mph difference between "B" mod and "C" mod. Matter of fact our "B" mod is 2 mph faster than our "C" mod right now. So what do you really need?..a pipe, a tower, a header manifold, and a sawsall blade to massage the transom with and you are ready to go.Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most.

B Mod Rookie
I just started racing BMH this season, and it's been a real kick. Previously, I have been racing BSH and 20, and I was amazed what the mod Y80 can do. Ran with the CMHs at Jesup and wasn't much off the pace.
Hope to see more of us at future races....Tom Burwinkle

I don't want to sound stupid but I have a question. First a little background. I ran BMR a couple times this year with someone else's rig to fill the class and had a blast. I have been thinking about building a boat for the class next year but don't have the money for a Yamato 80 even if one were available locally. The question is I have a Mark 25 power head on a shortened KE4 tower modified to run either an A Merc foot or Yamato mod foot. Do you guys think it would it be reasonably competitive?

Karl, It's all about how hard you want to work at it. To answer your question, Yes, I'm sure you could make it competitive. The classes are designed so that there is a place for everyone. The problem is that when you get off of the beaten path you have to do a lot of testing with different props. A merc 25 with a Yamato gearfoot might be difficult to find props for. I would use the Merc "A"/"B" gearfoot and I would not use the KE4 tower, The clamps, the swivel pin, and the size of the tower itself are not meaty enough for the pressures, You will break it. Keep an eye on e bay for a tower or even a set of clamps and build a cheap stick tower. PM me if you need helpOf all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most.
