  • Online Boating Safety Course for Millville, NJ

With the hope that the new law passes in New Jersey and drivers under 16 will be able to race at Millville, NJ this October I finally got around to looking up an online Boating Safety Course for me and my J driver.

Previous discussions here on hydroracer.net have pointed out that ALL boat operators in New Jersey must have evidence of passing a Boating Safety Course but NJ doesn't care which state issues the certificate.

I was pleasantly surprised with what I found. The web site:

    http://www.boat-ed.com/

offers Boating Safety Courses for about 42 states and I signed up for the Maryland course. Although you must register with your name and address there is no $$$$ required to begin the course. Not even credit card info is requested in advance. I'll pay $24.50 by credit card after I pass the course in order to get the certificate.

Once I pass the course and pay the fee I can download and print out a temporary certificate that is good for 30 days. The permanent certificate will be mailed to me in 5 to 7 business days.

The course is presented as a series of slides that are self-timed so that at a minimum you are presented with 3 1/2 hours of instruction. In other words you can't fast forward through the slides; you have to wait for the timer to count down before proceeding to the next slide. I consider myself to be a slow reader but usually I still have time at the end of each slide. Because there is repetition in the material presented it's not necessary to absorb all the information on every slide.

So here's my "tip of the day" if you want to take this Boating Safety Course online. Register and start the course 1/2 hour before the kickoff of any NFL game you're going to watch and by the time the final whistle blows you will have successfully completed the Boating Safety Course.

After all, if you can buzz around a lake while keeping track of other race boats, the starting clock, and patrol boat flags all at the same time, you should be able to keep one eye on the football game and one eye on the computer while gleaning enough information to pass the course (80% or higher grade) and simultaneously cheer your team to victory.

Just to make sure that everyone knows, If you are a resident of NJ, it must be a NJ approved course. Also if you live in NJ and do an approved online course, once you complete it you have to take the final test with an approved NJ instructor.

That's what I have been Saying!!!!!!!

      Mark,
Thanks so much for the info. That is what I have been trying to tell out of state racers about getting a safety certificate since this issue came up. It is only a matter of time until ALL states require something like this. Go online, take the test, pass it, and then come race in NJ.

The J bill in NJ has been drafted in the state assembly but it does not look like it will pass and get signed by the governor in time for the October race but certainly but April of 2011 the exemption to allow 13 year-olds to race in a sanctioned regatta will become law.
We here in NJ and Region 3 travel great distances to race at other region's races and would certainly appreciate it if other regions did the same for us.

True,. Its probably easier & cheaper to take the course/test outside of NJ [for those who reside elsewhere]. Then your good to go.. 1 time deal, you can visit -operate most any boat inc. race boats for waaay longer than a weekend.

Free Boating Course By The Coast Guard Auxilliary

Check with your local Bass Pro Shops. Ours offers a free Boater's Safety Course taught by the Coast Guard Power Squadron. The course, test, and cards are free. We had to be there at 7:00am and didn't get out until close to 8:00pm. The course and test were no joke. I drove US Navy ships over 50K tons and studied COLREGS constantly to keep my quals, this cousre was the real deal.
