it was my understanding that the test wheel will act like a regular wheel and water will be fed through the motor just as normal. have seen it like that on small mercs as well

thanks, i understood you hook up a 12volt pump to brass outlet in the rear.
just not sure how well it works and if you plug the lower unit intake.

have never heard of using the brass outlet. i know that SOME 302's are plumbed by their respective owners to have a hose hooked up. its right above the steering bar on a flat flange.. most likely you dont have this. the stock brass plug wont do. if you DO have the plug put in for water, this is all you need for water, and you can run without a wheel at all (although i think itd be a good idea to do both... fail safe). ive actually looked into getting the water tap done myself. but from what i hear its pretty easy to screw up if you dont know what youre doing... so i think ill leave that to somebody experienced. if you have a knowledgeable 302 guy around, perhaps they could help?
Before you ever try that, drop a line to Rob Montoya on the plumbing routing, he's at yamatoracing.net. We had used 12V. powered bilge pumps to feed our Y80s in the past. You just can't run it on test wheel without pumping water. The Yamato engines have no internal water pump in the gear unit. You have seen test wheel operation on the Mercs because, they along with the others, as they all have water pumps in, or on, the greahousings. The Yamatos ram the water thru the downsnout behind the prop. In C mod using the Yamatos the gear housings are modified to feed water thru the rather than at the stock location.
Best o luck

Look for a brass plug at the rear of the motor right around steering bar height, that is you inlet. Send me your e-mail and I will send you some pics, we have tested several motors using a 12 volt bilge pump....no problems. The trick is to have the right male fitting that screws into the inlet. Give TJ (Tom Johnston) a call that's where I got mine from.
OK, once you have a water source on a Tomato, you don't need the test wheel?
Bad idea! Please do not run any motor, Yamato, Merc, OMC, whatever, even those equipped with an internal pump, with no load. Put on a test wheel, or for dry out, if you don't have a test wheel, put on a small prop. Of course, do this safely over the water, nose in, stern out, with the prop part way in the water. Might be good to hold the boat?
Generally, two strokes sort of gallop at idle or just above, with no load. That's bad for all sorts of parts, what with rods slapping around, etc. Put a load on it, even a light load, which is much better.

I heard that if you don't have the brass plug, and a lot of 302's don't, you can route the cooling water from a hose and fitting through the motor's cooling water exit hoses...Top down.
I got a nylon fitting that had hose threads on one end and a tube nipple on the other, hooked it to the top water exit nipple... plugged the other and it seemed to work fine for me.
It will circulate through the cooling jacket and come out where it usually goes in. Plug up anywhere else it might come out.
