  • Yukon 800 Starts Today

It's here, summer solstice weekend and the Yukon 800. Race starts today at 11AM at Pikes Landing in Fairbanks, Alaska. I'm heading down to check everything out and watch the start of the race.

It's been pretty dry this year so far and the river levels are fairly low, so not many shortcuts are open, no records will be set. Here is a link to the official Fairbanks Outboard Association website.

Good luck to all the racers!

Harold Attla leads after day 1

After 400 miles, Harold Attla is leading the race with a time of 5:42:34, only about 6 minutes off the course record. Amazing considering the low water this year. Bill Page is in second at 5:56:50, Tom Huntington at 6:12:17, Joey Zuray at 6:27:14, then Tom Kriska at 6:34:49. Arnold Marks has scratched with lower unit and prop problems, and 3 other racers are yet to come into Galena.

They spend the night in Galena and restart for the return 400 miles at 6AM Sunday.

        Update

I posted some bad info on the halfway times for yesterday, Harold Attla's time was 6:03:33, 6 boats of the 9 who started made it to the halfway point. We have light rain in Fairbanks today, and should see the first boat about 12:30.

There's a nice article in the paper today with a few photos but the headline is wrong, it shows Harold's cousin Albert as the leader.

Attla wins, for the ninth time.

Only 3 boats completed the race, of the 9 starters. A nice article ran in the paper.

"The 43-year-old captain of My Pleasure was impressive, too, in steering the boat to a two-day elapsed time of 12 hours, 38 minutes and 21 seconds.
