      This Site is Bona Fide!

I checked the site out, and it even has our little pure gas mom-and-pop market in Harriman, TN.

      Great reference, Matt........!

CAUTION site may not be up to date.

It seems that this site, helpful though it may be, has errors. If you use the site information ONLY, and don't look at the pump, you may get gas with ethanol or other additives instead of what you want and need to pass the fuel meter test, even though listed on the site as otherwise.

I took a fishing trip last week to Arkansas and was wanting to fill my pleasure boat tank with ethanol free gas because of moisture attracting problems that have caused problems in the past. I tried 4 of the stations listed on the Arkansas list and NONE were as advertised. All had notices on the pumps that their gas contained at least 10% ethanol. Perhaps they changed after the listing was made on the site, but the fact remained they had alcohol in their gas, when it was stated on the site they were alcohol free.

This site is surely a help in trying to find gas that contains no ethanol, BUT it may be out of date, as I found, when actually pulling into the station to purchase. It would seem that the public can post on the site, and since some of the folks that work at the stations don't even know whether their gas is ethanol free (my experience when I asked) you still run a risk of getting what you don't want if you don't verify yourself.

            Good advice Bill.

If you aren't sure the easiest test is the food color test. A drop of food coloring is not soluble in ethanol free gas, but is soluble in any gas containing ethanol. Food coloring is dissolved in water and does not mix with ethanol free gas, it goes straight to the bottom and stays there as little dots or a blob. 10% ethanol gas absorbs the water based color and distributes it evenly thru the sample.

If anyone wants to see this in action I can demonstrate at Lock Haven over Labor Day weekend.

              Ethanol gas

Iwould like to ask a question. I notice that most racing organizations that use gas are going to ethanol blends. How are they doing it and not having problems? Its just a matter of time when ethanol free gas will not be available to most of us. On occasion we have run ethanol gas in our Mod Merc engines. Is their a performance advantage? None that we can tell. Did it hurt the engines performance? Not that we could tell. Did it damage the engines? No. Boat racing needs to wake up. Their has to be a way to test this stuff that is fair for all. We need to go green soon and take advantge of this selling point. What I am afraid of is were going just keep hoping that this is going to go away. When the time comes that we are forced to do it we won`t be ready.

Art, the problem is there is no inexpensive test or tester that can tell the difference between ethanol and other additives that DO dramatically increase power and are much more toxic. I think we are already past the time of 10% ethanol gas being what is at the gas station just down the road from the races, but the world did not end.

Aviation gas and ethanol free race gas are nearly universally available to those willing to look for them. Other racing organizations use a few schemes ... event supplied gas, community gas or extreme penalties for being caught non conforming gas after the expensive tests.

I think all we need to do is require that APBA Divisional and Nationals have a supply of non ethanol gas by some means as they are currently doing on a voluntary basis.

Running's ok, but make sure you totally drain the fuel system when done. Left in the engine, it can clog passages and hoses, and if you have "old" pre-ethanol rubber it will rot it, including hose and fuel pump diaphrams. Voice of experience.
