simple answer............

A boat falling apart in the middle of a race is what turned Ed Karelsen into a boat builder. As I recall the story, in the late Fifties Ed and brother Dave bought a brand new D Stock hydro from Joe Swift in Florida. In his first or second race, Ed came slamming into a turn and the bottom fell out of the boat. Ed had recently gotten a degree in Naval Archetecture from the U of Wash. (again, this is an old story filtered through an old man's fuzzy memory and subject to correction by anyone who knows better), and decided he could build a better boat himself . . . which he certainly proved over the years!

the reason the boat came apart like it did....................DRY ROT!!!!!!!!!!!................and it did not happen in WA........
