From one new guy to another; welcome! Yea, this is a blast.

While it might be a drive for you, MHRA does have two Racer Schools on its schedule this summer. Both are on a Friday before racing weekends so you can go to school on Friday and, club equipment availability pending, possibly race on Saturday and/or Sunday. The first class is on Friday July 18 in Constantine MI and the second is September 10th in Grass Lake, MI. My son participated last year in both the Racer School and the Never Ever Raced program and, will were hooked.

Here is the link to MHRA's web site. http://www.michiganhydroplane.com/index.html Seats are on a first come first served basis so....hope to see you there.

Funny how these things go, after all that [woulda been my 1st race] I was not asked to show mine, just if I had one. Lambertville's also a fine place to start.

                Mercury Modified

Well, the C merc is an easy one to find and make run. The problem is, to make it faster than the current Yamatos, you need to really work hard at it. And find the right blocks, a two port block is what you want, and that is very hard to find, if not almost impossible. It takes a lot of looking in junk yards, peoples junk fishing boats, etc.

Once you find one, then you can begin porting it, reworking the inside a little, putting megaphone exhaust on it, and just trying to make it fast. The How to build a Mercury Modified manual will be of no help to you. That covers the basics. What it can provide you is a platform from which to learn what makes these engines go faster, and then you can apply that knowledge to figure out what you want to try.

To be honest, i think the 125CC pro class is a great place to start, easy to build, easy to maintain, even a stock racer that has no engine knowledge could figure out how to change the pistons and tune it.

And with your knowledge, you could easily find a Yamato cheap and build it up for Mod racing if you want more racing closer to home, but don't give up on the Pro, it is a blast, and the people are fairly friendly.

Basically you need to go to both races sometime and see for yourself. The C Mod merc is a dinasaur, but some o fus like working on them and making them run somewhat compeitive with the Yamatos. I think someone can make a C Merc to beat a Yamato, but it is not easy. It is more a labor of love than anything else. That is why they opened up the rules on it, to allow some of us to tinker away at it and try. I would bet though that as soon as it is figured out, they will delete the engine from the class.
