looking for a 302

I am looking for a 302 (used) and trying to sell a 102 that needs a coil. The 102 is a very strong and fast motor when its hitin on both coils! It has one new coil in it. I am ready to get a 302 cause i am tired of fighting with the coils and points. Just trying to see whats avaliable for me. The 102 has an electronic ignition system on it that i put togather. This works very well and it only needs a 1200 miliamp battery, it is a very simple setup but they wont allow it in stock, even though it would be a very simple fix for the 102 problem a lot of people are having!

I would support this modification in the Modified Category, but not in Stock as it does not support the Stock Outboard mission statement of "current production motors available new or factory reconditioned"

It is time to stop offering life support for out-of-production motors in Stock Outboard.

If I needed a new 302, I'd buy one still in the box from Japan. Never know what a guy has done to a previously raced one.
I'm pretty sure Ric can add the good stuff (reworked lower unit and head). Also comes in a nice box you can use to ship out the old 102.

I think it would be great for mod too! Seems to me that points would be a pain on a mod motor. I am going to test a few more things, but what i have done so far has turned out well. The motor is more responsive but yet it doesnt seem to cause it to turn more RPM, and it also cranks much easier. All hardware was machined exactly 180 out for the sensors so all you would need to do is bolt the sensor plate right where the points mounted. To set timing you simply set your piston as you normally would mark the flywheele and line the marks up with a timing light. And if this were legal for mod then this might put more coils out there for the stock guys , just a thought.

Part 1, yes if you have an out of production motor that will be the only option left real soon. And that really helps STOCK outboard racing.

Part 2, Kick out all of the old out of productions motors and you will have the 302 Yamato, Tohatsu, and sidewinder. What cracks me up is that tomorrow there will be two more 102's for sale for the same price of a new(used) 302. And these folks are banking on some new person buying it that has no clue what is going on.

I disagree that 60%-70% of current Stock Outboard members dont already own "current production motors available new or factory reconditioned" and would not purchase them if there were new motors available.

But, if that number was accurate......so what? What is wrong with Mod? The way Stock Outboard is currently raced it is practically indistiguishable from Mod anyways, especially in the Yamato classes.

reply to Part 1) Yes, that does help STOCK racing return to what it was.

reply to Part 2) Nobody will get screwed buying any currently legal motor. Every proposal for engine replacement has a place to race. The politicians in APBA understand that proposing anything else is both political suicide and suicide for the sport itself.

Add Mercury to that list and I agree. What I dont agree on is that it should happen all at once. Incrementalism works.

I favor a carrot approach rather than a stick approach. That is: clearly designate a "motor of choice" per class and then use the rulebook to either penalise the non-motors of choice or reward the designated motors of choice to make it the dominant motor.

Let a natural process of attrition take place while still giving everyone a place to race.

An unintended benefit is the availability of equipment to assist new racers to get started at a reduced cost as non competitive but legal engines become available.

Bottom line is this system works for the 102. I know its not legal for stock and wont be,
but if it could be legal for MOD then it could help out stock. People will not just throw down their race motor just because a coil is not legal, . Some people cant afford to buy a new or used motor that is avalible, they will try to fix what they got as long as it is allowed to be raced. If it were legal in MOD say 10 people run this setup well that makes 20 working coils that could be sold to stock racers who are having coil problems.
Most every other part for the 102 you can still get somehow.
I am a new racer and all i have is a102 with a bad coil therefore i wont be able to race this year and im sure there are a lot more racers out there with the same problem as well. Even too there are a lot of people who just play around on the weekend with the 102 that dont even race with APBA, this is an option for them too.
