  • Lift rails

Building a 750 runabout and have been told this hull likes rails, but have also been informed the are not allowed in stock. Is this true? Legal in Pro and Mod so I jumped the gun and put them on. It would make sense they would be ok in stock too so we could use same boat. REPLY ALL!! Don't want to take them off. First boat so they might be holding the whole thing together.

Hi Larry, I got this from the 2010 rule book.
    Stock Outboard hulls:
    ...
"2) No part of the immersed surface may have a negative dead rise. The immersed surface may have a maximum notch of 5/8”, and turning
fins may also be added to the immersed surface."

"Immersed Surfaces: The wetted surface of the hull, including the bottom and chines, from transom to bow."

If your rails have no negative deadrise, I think you're in the clear.
    I hope this helps.

      Larry,
Are you tired of the smooth large hydro ride and feel the need to be more jostled around a bit to keep the ol blood flowing??
How is everything in the northern white and cold Wisconsin?
Hope it's not too cold for the glue to dry.
Now the challenge is to get Mike Franck to build a runabout and the Ski's and the Frank's would have a real race going.......

            Lucky find?

Hey Larry, I thought all the large trees had been logged off in northern Wisconsin. Where did you find one big enough to carve a big runabout out of?

now that thar reply from pops 67 is funny. i think bro lars found his tree on same land as dadeo, since he [dadeo] also built another dmr to see which was better. his dadeo or the new one. will b trying out this season and will be listening to lars advice on setup so i don't flip this one testing!! oh the shame!!! the[mutant earthling] where does one get the turning fin and mount for the luce style boat? also the transom mt and fin.

The rule states " immersed surface", help me but doesn't immersed mean in the water?

The lift rails are not in the water.

If any boat is illegal with immersed surfaces its' the Beswinger, Davids' Luce, J, A boats with their step off of the bottom. That step is about a 1 1/2" deep if memory serves me. That step is in the water when the boat is just floating.
Granted, once underway the step is above the surface but isn't a lift rail too?

It seems to me that there is some inconsistancy here. Hey, that never happens in racing.

Lift rails are not legal in Stock. Not at this time anyway.
Several years ago a J runabout was DQ'D at the Nationals. Ask Sam Hemp and Don Allen. The J committee approved lifting rails with a measurement. How do I know this is because George Thornhill and I wrote the rule. It was approved. A few SORC members had a FIT!!! saying negative dead rise. Following year the J Committee reversed their decision.
Larry, Yes the Luce boat likes the rails. I suggested them to Lonnie Morris and made him a set. The boat hooks up better in the turn.

funny how that rule doesnt tell you what a "fin" is... or that the "fin" should be in the water...

                        just a thought

I Agree!!! It it a fin or a lifting rail? Up to the inspector as it stands now. I am seeing a few CSR's with negative dead rise or concavity forward of amidships between the keel and chine. No one says anything. Guess it depends who you are or who built the boat.

the boat builder was asked, however his side of the story was not taken into consideration

Used the wifes X-mas tree. HUGE-had to wrap in tarps, use ratchet straps to squeeze it
down and came close to tying a rope, running it down the hall, out the living room window and pulling it in with the truck. She has to down size!
