I just heard that Lon Stevens passed away within the last day or two. Those who knew him knew he was a master with Mercury engines, especially the Alky version. Anyone who has ever heard one of his "side-carb 6's " will never forget the sound.

    He was 92 years old.

    Rest In Peace...........

Saw Lon in Jesup, Ga. a few years ago...............he looked happy and was having fun in the South!

I remember staying with him at his place in San Francisco many years back on my way to the Bakersfield Nationals. What a character he was. He was a six cylinder Merc guy but he also built a mean 55-H back in the day!

if you ever wondered what Lon meant to boatracing fans, just watch the beach at Depue when Paul and Joe headed to the water, everyone comes a running to see and most of all hear the sweetest sound in the world.

May God get him home, before anyone else knows he is gone.

        Lon Stephens

We send our deepest sympathy to his loved ones. It was sad to hear Lon had passed away last night from pneumonia. The last three weeks he was at peace with where he was. We have really enjoyed having him in FL the last few years. He had been living near Dale Burton in Mossy Head FL and came to a number of races and antique meets until this year when he slowed down. He was such a genius on the Mercs, and on the old antique motors. He would talk for hours (or as long as you wanted to listen) about modifying motors for racing. What a wealth of knowledge we lost with his passing. We had a lot of good times together and I will always miss his smiling face and good attitude, rest in peace my good friend Lon.
