  • 302 Ignition System

I was just curious if a 302 ignition system will fit and work on a 102 engine? If it does is it legal in C Mod. I am sure it would not be allowed in a stock class but just curious.

A Yamato 202 is basically a 102 powerhead and tower with a 302 ignition system. So it is possible......but.....

Not sure about how much effort would be required to retro-fit a 102 with a 302 ignition. However, I strongly suspect it would not be legal in APBA C Modified.

      Cost Factor

A 302 CD ignition is about $1000. You would be better off buying a complete new 302 from Ric Montoya.

That takes care of that idea since the pipes will cost that much to.

            202 Mod.....

It is currently not legal in the APBA Mod Category. If it was Bryan Tharp would have brought his out along time ago!

Nothing except don't have time to be setting the points all the time and not real good at it. To busy keeping three boats going and helping other folks.

Practice Makes Perfect! If you can build boats you can time a 102.

I am told it depends on which model 102 that you have.
The length of the crank taper above the c/case varies.
But otherwise it is a drop on unit.
This would solve the NLA coil issue, although aftermarket coils are allowed.
                        Other than starting and maintenance,
there would be no performance difference.
May also encourage the flow of 102s into mod from stock,
                        as apparently wished by some.
Would be a good amendment for our mod commissioners to look into at the AGM?
                        ps; this is a quote i just got from Ric for a complete new/used 302 powerhead;
                        302 Power head assembly - used - $1406

Set it and forget it. We ran a 102 in cmod for years with points and consistantly seen rpm's of 8800. Points worked fine, is CDI better? Sure it is, but you already have the 102. Also the side cover (exhaust) is different for the 102 and 302, so you need to know which motor your going to use when you order the side cover from Lee.

Just my 2 cents, have any other questions give me a shout

                            Mr. Walker,

Just for conversation on the "202's".....My 202D has points+102 crankcase assy and the tall (y-80/y-102 length tower)....The "newer" 202E/F? has the 302 ign+crankcase assy and short 302 tower........Not sure the reason for the new'r 202 cause it is basically a 302........Both models use the 302 style cyl/pistons/tuner pipe.

$400 sounds reasonable to git away from the set'n points/lack'a parts situation ?....Anyone done it?

the latest 202 (E) is "basically" a 302, except for it has a 102 ignition (except it has dual points) To convert the 202E to a 302, you have to buy the 302 transistor ignition and the 302 flywheel and you are set.............

converting a 102 to a 302 transistor ignition does not work, as the crank is different, the top bearing cap assy is different, along with the mag assy.............and not legal in stock or mod...........

Mike, just MOD the 102 and hope the coils last..........or go full blown 302mod...........
