  • J/A/AX motor differences

can someone help me out with some tech questions. I bought my stepdaughter a J boat. Can a J motor later be used as an A or AX? An A dropped back to a J?

the dominate motor in J & asx is the Merc 15. it is slated for the axe in A after the 2010 season (Nov, 1 2010) it is weak in A
the omc 15 is the only other option for J/asx. it is for now the dominate motor in A.

If you are only going to race the J classes...J & AX....

I would not buy a Sindewinder....they are not legal J catagory engines.

If your going to race Stock...then yes you could buy a sidewinder for A

            A vs J

Both the Jeanrude and merc 15s that are legal for A stock are also legal for J stock, but a restrictor plate behind the carb is added to limit the power. The restrictor plate is purchased from APBA. Good luck to you and your step-daughter.

              J/AX restrictor plates

Plates are not expensive, $15 each fom APBA HO. Order 2 of each in case drop one in pond, or lend to someone if they forgot theirs, or sell when she's beyond the class. When she is old enough to race 2 classes(ie: J/AX, or AX/A), it takes approx 10min to change the plates/remove. The plates go in between the back of carb and block - a little fussy to do at first. Have someone show you first couple of times, as you have to remove pullcord recoil housing, but a snap after you've seen it done, or have an extra set of hands to pass wrenches, or pull cord out.
