Being around racing all my life made it pretty easy to work in a hardware store for almost four years from the time I was 15 up until last month. All of my adult, male co-workers would have my back when a customer came in and wouldn't want me to help them in the nuts/bolts department because I was a teenage girl. It always felt good to prove them wrong.
Also, I'm really close with family that I would never see had it not been for racing. Lock Haven is our Runne/Gallagher/Pomphrey/etc. family reunion every year.

Here's another vote for shim sticks over props for spreading mayo/pb/jelly. Give 'er a wipe on the thigh and get to spreading! I've raced for 18 years now, and the things that I have learned/experienced from the races have by far outgrown the things from home. Respect, courage, patience, pride, humility, friendship, knowledge, maturity, and responsibility. Couldn't think of a better place/family for my son to grow up around. GL

          What flavor oil??

"Shim sticks are the ultimate utensil. Not a big fan of jelly, but Peanut Butter and oil sandwiches are my favorite" Quote from Allie Runne

Allie, next time you're home for a visit from school we'll have PB & O sandwiches for dinner!!!!! Maybe some left overs too.

Having married into boat racing, I missed the growing up years with it. But I am so very grateful that my children have been able to do so. They are more well rounded, grounded and family minded then most of their peers. They have family and friends all over the country and absolutely cherish those relationships. I would not trade a minute of their childhood experiences with boat racing. It has helped make them the great kids they are.

Stock Outboard is all about a level playing field.

True parity is one motor per class.

It's RACING, not just another boat ride!

After racing was finished Monday at Lock Haven, your wife passed by the front of my trailer. I'm not sure she recognized me, but I told her, "I wish I had a camera, there's something poetic about this." She was pushing the baby in the stroller in front of her with one hand and pulling your empty boat cart behind her with the other hand.

Below is a substitute for the photo I wanted. Folks will just have to imagine what the tyke on your shoulder looks like.

I am a couple of generations down in the world of racing, and now am seeing my grandson in the pits. It's an amazing thing to see and the best way to raise our children. As stated earlier, there are so many wonderful traits we learn from this world and then get to pass down.
It's a wonderful day in the life of a mother to read my son's words earlier. I am very proud of all that he has become and thank everyone in the 'village' of boat racing that helped me raise him to be a great man, husband, and father!
And yes, I've been known to use a screwdriver or so for sammies in the pits. Shim sticks do work better for the mayo.

                What Boat Racing Teaches Everyone

The following is a list taken from the 2001 South Shore Outboard Association Boat Racing History Manual which I helped to compile. Benefits of outboard racing the section is called and listed as follows.
                1. Camaraderie, 2. Dealing/compling with outboard boat racing safety, 3. Increases one's awareness and reaction times, 4. Following a structured set of rules, 5. Forms lasting friedships, 6. Provides an opportunity to utilize one's individual mechanical, woodworking and engineering skills, 7. Therapeutic value, and 8. Travel.

                Sincerely,
                Don Graham III

Along with the many benefits listed here, boat racing has and will help me in quite a large step in my near future. I graduate from college in December with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, and of all the work experience, internships, and high GPA's, the amount of work I have done at the boat races far outweighs anything else I am putting on my resume. When I interviewed for my internship in the beginning of the summer, one of the first things I was asked was to go into more detail about what I did at the boat races as a chief scorer (among other titles). Of course, that always leads into the best part of our sport: the love, family, and friends. Something I would never trade for anything in the world! Thanks to everyone who has taught me what I know thus far, and I hope that it helps me score my dream job during a recession

                    My kiddos

I've always been busy traveling the country racing or rescuing for boat races. I have always considered boat racers my family away from home. This year was the first season for my son & I. We have never been closer and I am realizing that this wonderful sport I love is helping him become a fine young man! Now, it is time for you Haley (my daughter) to dust off your cut suit and ride along side with your brother.

This past weekend my son learned a valuable lesson: not to let mom run the boat in ASH. He is now learning the fine art of powerhead head rebuilding!
I told him when we sarted that he will pull every bolt out of it and put them all back in. He will also be doing the parts order list and all of the clean up and prep work. Who knows maybe it will run a little better in 2010?

All the sightseeing that you do along the way
I guess I need to work on my parenting skills team Shep always seems to forget the sight seeing part!

You might consider having them dust off the complete cut suit
