  • SOA's Moses Lake Race 9/12/09 & 9/13/09 Cancelled

At tonight's SOA Board meeting we received word that a nasty weekend windstorm has rendered Connelly Park unusable. Initial reports are that some 15 trees are down, and another damaged 5 will need to be taken down for safety's sake. Additionally the grounds, shoreline and parking areas themselves were pretty badly beaten up.

Initial assessment by Irrigation District personnel is that damage may exceed $20,000, and the Irrigation District has elected to close the park for the season.

The bad news is that this forces cancellation of the regatta...The schedule at this point is pretty packed and there's really not time to scramble for a re-set at a back-up location.

The good news...HOPEFULLY...is that racers get this word in time to whoa-up and avoid rushing over the mountains to view a debris-field. The POTENTIALLY better news is that there appears to be no conflicting APBA event on Lawrence weekend, September 25 (testing) 26/27th (racing) and the board has voted, Pending PRO Commission approval, to shift PRO Western Divisionals to Lawrence Lake.

Note: so there's no confusion with John's post...This is Seattle outboard's moses lake race that was suppose to be this coming weekend, NOT AOF nationals the weekend after. just to be clear.

Thanks Kyle and Mike. This happened over a holiday weekend and wasn't discovered by the District until yesterday. Additionally we have two members who may have been heading over early because they have family in the area so getting word out quickly was important...I'd forgotten about the upcoming event at Cascade Park.

Just a question though, has anybody checked Cascade's status? It should be fine, since damage at Connelly appears to have been the product of an intense local squall line and Cascade's about 20 miles distant, but it might be worth a check out call.

Just got off the phone with Cascade and they had no damage at all. They were not even aware of the damage at Connelly

To confirm Cascade, I've just talked to Mike Harmon who'd headed across early and was at Cascade Park, about to head over to look at Connelly as we spoke. Mike says Cascade was untouched by the storm.
