Stock Outboard is all about a level playing field.
True parity is one motor per class.

I guess before this gets nasty, we should call Obama Man and request he appoint the stock outboard commission a fairness czar. Since racers are a community, the main criteria should be that they have experience in community organizing. He or she could moderate all topics and decide what is best for us collectivly. We then would all feel good and have to be so competitive. Just a thought.

parts scavenging
John I agree with what you say except for the fact that this same problem exists with the "Merc 15",in that new racers don't know the ins and outs with regard to the old merc. parts that legally can be used to improve their engines, maybe its about time for old George and others to comment on this subject.

Dean, That's a very interesting thought. There would be some issues but would be worth exploration.
Carl, That is one of the issues the SORC was considering when we voted to remove the Merc from ASR/ASH. The Merc is the motor of choice for the J & AX classes and belongs to the J category.John Runne

question
When has an engine being forced into retirement with a last legal date actually benefited the SO cat?

I'll give a great example of obsoleting an engine.
1985. Final year for the Merc KG4 and Mark 15. OMC 'A' only legal motor beginning 1986.
Worked perfectly. 5 elimination heats at the 1987 Stock Nationals in ASH and ASR. No issues of trying to achieve parity between old/new.
Also, the Merc 30H was dumped in CSH and CSR in early/mid 90's. CSH largest class in all of APBA.

I don't recall the exact number of ASH and ASR elims in '84 and '85.
That's really not the point.
The point is the transition to the OMC 'A' was a huge success and relatively painless. The Merc 'A' was way faster at the time. Trying to slow it down to run with the OMC would have been a nightmare and greatly hindered the popularity of the OMC.
Talk about a motor that needed to go. You had to cobble together special parts from top to bottom to make a good one. Sifting through scrapyards...what a joke. Plus, it was running higher than hell and way dangerous.

In 1985, hundreds of OMC A engines were sitting in boxes ready for shipment and the A classes came out with a boom in 1986 because as soon as a racer ordered one, he or she received one. That is not the case with the Sidewinder engines.
Additionally, the 30H was eliminated years after the 102 had been a legal engine and had become the engine of choice. There were only a very few 30H's that were being run on a very infrequent basis when they were eliminated from the C classes. Finally, the 30H got the "axe" but that only affected 3 or 4 drivers when it happened.14-H

Good call to ban it though. But as Mr Hearn stated, the 102 was well established with a proven dealer network and factory support by 1990, it was really a no-brainer to ban the 30-H as it was to bag the KG-4.

As for the 102 continuing to be allowed, I would like to see it, that allows me to get a little more bang for my buck at the races.Silas Jordan
