Tiny Tachs are waterproof and cheap. But the Commercial Tiny Tach is worth the extra money.
http://www.tinytach.com/tinytach/commercial.php
The Commercial version is programmable, so you can use it on different motors. It has a memory feature for highest RPM which is great for test conditions. It reads faster (.5 secs instead of 2.5 secs) and in 1 RPM increments instead of 10 RPM increments.
It is 29 dollars more expensive, and worth every penny.
The display is the same size, but the memory feature makes up for that.

My Tiny Tach ( commercial model ) registered 9640 rpm for my Bass Machines Tohatsu when I sheared a pin while leading in the first heat of D Stock eliminations at Grass Lake. Fortunately my prop jammmed on the shaft and I finished the heat.
A bigger screen would be nice, but I like the accuracy and the price.
Also, if you order a Tiny Tach, you can order an "engine harness" for about $15 more.
The engine harness allows you to disconnect the tach cable by simply unplugging it at the engine, instead of unwinding it from the plug leads, etc.
The cables are available in the lengths you want. Buy them direct from Tiny Tach. They are very helpful and you can specify the cable length you want (get it long enough) and you can specify how long you want the 'engine harness' portion to be.
