Ok, we have put Lock Haven on our schedule for 4 years down the road when we retire. Looking on the map that really looks close to the east coast If we come that far we want to sight see too.
Now if I have not become directionally challenged I thought the mid-west was places like Michigan, Minnesota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and so on. Needs to be somewhere that we can make it out and back and do the racing sceen in a week and not have to drive 20 hours a day. We are not getting any younger and like to take breaks and stop for the day before it is dark.
Hope this helpsMike - One of the Montana Boys

Gotta vote for Constantine, MI
I made my races I won't miss list a few years back when I moved to AL for a few years. Constantine, MI and Lock Haven.PA were both on the list. Akron/Lakemore wasn't around then. But based on your criteria, I'd vote for Constantine. I've enjoyed racing at all three sites and you can't go wrong with any of them.
Look forward to seeing y'all out this way.

Alexandria/Pineville Louisiana is one of the best race courses in the United STates. I have been to many places and it is really good. There is usually a race there each year, but not always the same weekend. Look for when a race is scheduled in 2010. Just had the APBA Winter Nationals there in 2009 and had great weather and conditions. There will probably be an NBRA race there in 2010. Centralia, Illinois is another great place in the midwest. The pits are not great (a parking lot and a boat ramp), but the water and course are great. It is right in town and very convenient. NBRA is having there Nationals there August 7-9, 2009.

race choice
Talk to anyone, the Pro Nationals at Depue, Illinois is not just a race, but a rich experience from the drivers party, somewhat like the taste of the regions that Brian Cafferelli puts together for the Mod Nationals, the food along the lake front, the Depue Men's club personnel are everywhere to help, the kind of speed you will see out of the alky burners, a fun banquet on Saturday night, to the biggest crowds you will see at a National event.
Come to Depue and enjoy a great time and event.

You need to attend a PRO nationals in the middle of the summer in the middle of the country. Everyone should see it at least once. Not because of the racing, or because Pro is faster or better, or that the people who race Pro are any different than any other category, but because the PRO nationals epitomizes what COULD be done at other race sites. I believe one of the biggest reason's boat racing has not evolved to better greatness and notoriety is because we have no "track" racing. Get people interested in our sport by track grass roots racing that they can attend every week or at least more than once a summer, and you get a lot of fans, converts, sponors, etc. (Get a bunch of drag racers on the avenue in your small town, who meet every Saturday at 9 pm, then you eventually draw a crowd and others who want to do it too, and it grows from there). And, while the Pro nationals is only once a year, it is still repitious. The fans are loyal because the venue has been put on in the same place for so many years. The whole process is put on by a group (DePue Men's Club and USTS) that has made this a well oiled machine. The whole week end is very professional.
I heard once that they estimate that over the week over 100,000 spectators (not all at once) graces the grounds of the Pro nationals. Add a couple of beer tents, professional announcing, good food stands, bands every night from Wed to Saturday, good sponsors, and loud fast racing with full fields.
At one time (not sure anymore), the state of Illinois even commissioned license plates commemorating DePue and the PRO nationals. (Now that is something). On Interstate 80 you will even see one of those green signs letting you know the exit for DePue and the National boat races. Really, how much better does it get.
And if you want to meet a lot of the racers on here, you will see many a face for the week end from Hydroracer. This is a fun one to watch, that is for sure. And a couple of years ago, DePue was the site of one of the largest boat racing reunions (APBA, NOA, AOF, NBRA, Wildcat, etc) that was ever held.
You will NOT be sorry if you chose to travel to DePue. Heck, you could catch a ride with a West Coaster. If you do, though, you will need to find a Hawiian shirt and learn how to say RRRRRRRR. (You will learn about that tradition if you attend the race-gotta save some surprises.)

Thanks to all who had kind words about Lock Haven... We try our best and have been getting this year's ready for the past few months. We have some additional features coming next year (our 40th annual involvement in the event, though it is actually a few years more for the racers).
Looking forward to seeing all there this Labor Day.

My Vote
If you want to race, attend Constantine MI race. For some reason it draws lots of boats from all over each year for stock. Nice race course, little rough because it is a mid sized course. But it is fun.
Depue - If you want to race there go during the Mod/Stock race, but you will not even get close to the expereince you would with the Pro Nat's. I have been to and participated in each and i have to say, the Pro nat's there are a big deal to the town. Hey, come to think of it, you could step your CSH into OSY400 and race there at the Pro Nat's........ You would not be dissapointed from the huge spectacle that Depue Pro Nat's is.
Lockhaven is a race one should attend at least once. It is a racers course, long starights and very tight corners. Maybe this is why it is so popular, it is old school river racing on a river that is crystal clear. Pits are not the best, but very adequete. if you don't get a front row you cart a ways to the water. Boat ramp gets full fast. if you get down a bit you can be at rivers edge, with a small lip to roll over. Oh yeah, you race under the bridge too, look up and see a lot of folks watching. Just pick out the kids and remember their faces. Just in case one decides to be a kid and see if they can get you with a nuggie. Never had it happen, but it always goes through my mind !Dave Mason

I would have to say DePue just because I am from there and I think we have the best races out there! Great fan support, great support from the DePue Mens Club and Us title series and a great location! It is the highlight of our year to have the Nationals in DePue and the town really comes together to put on the best race possible.

Midwest?
I've been to Lockhaven, as a spectator, twice, and agree that it just may be the coolest place to enjoy racing....but, you DID say the midwest.
For stocks, the nicest place that I've been would be Constantine.
However, Top-O Michigan is without a doubt one of the best races going. Tons of history and a course that is one of a kind. Sorry, you will have to put together a runabout, hydro's would not make the first turn buoy. These lakes are BIG and ROUGH.
The trip across the U.P. would be half the attraction, and driving across the 'Mighty Mac' ain't too bad either.
I'ts too bad that you can't make it this year. You could attend 'nationals at Grass Lake, and then attend Top'O the following weekend. A tough life indeed. Not quite as nice as Mr. Stott's 16 week plan....but nice.
