  • Tohatsu price?

Does anyone know what a Tohatsu, class D motor sells for? Do you have to buy the motor and send it to "Bass Masters", to be converted for racing or can you buy the race-ready motor from either Bass Masters, or a Tohatsu dealer? I think I'm going to race DSH and the few Merc 44xs motors that are available are pretty old now so I would like a nice new engine. Oh, and does anyone know if it comes with a prop?

You buy the Tohatsu straight from Bass. It's brand new and ready to race. No prop.

You used to be able to buy a reproduction 44XS from Dave Scott. I don't know if he's still building and selling those or not.

First let's get one thing straight. It's Bass Machines, not bass masters. There's a link for more information on the front page of Hydroracer. You'll need to call Bass Machines for current price and availability. If you inquire at a marine dealer they will have no idea what you're talking about. (although powerhead parts are readily available at any dealer.) You can get a complete race motor from Bass Machines. Shiny and new, ready to go. Add your own prop and water.
      Cheers!

              Bass Masters?

that's the best one i've heard yet...

i roped davey in his new rig last saturday at olympia. you bass masters guys might be on to something. that new motor sure was fast. the tohatsu started cold first pull and was super smooth. sid sure builds a nice motor. i'm not switching over yet but it was cool to see sid standing like a proud pappa watching (3) tohatsu's in a 7 boat heat...... davey won his first heat with the new motor...

                  Nice Choice

I think you are making a good choice buying new equipment like that. Too often new racers buy used equipment that is used up just to get in the sport, and lose interest because it is not as competitive. You can work to make the new stuff fast and be in the hunt in short order.

If you buy a Bass engine, start ordering props as well. Please, don't buy someones old props to try. Simply pick up the phone and call Dewald or Brinkman. Pinner might be still making props too. But order a four or five to get you going. Plan on keeping at least two. Explain to the prop builder you choose what class you will be racing in, what hull you will be running the engine on, and your weight, etc. They will even give you advice on how to set up your rig with the prop. Might not be exact for your rig, but it is a starting point and you go test and get it the way you like it.

                    Hello Instructor,

Make sure you talk to people about the right size of boat. If you are building a hyroplane for the Tohatsu "D" motor the boat should be a little wider and longer than a Mercury "D" boat. Botttom width 38" to 40" wide and an afterplane length of 82" to 84" long.

Talk to the guys already runing the Tohatsu. And if you are talking a runabout talk to runabout guys. Not too many D Stock runabouts.

What part of the country do you live?

                    Good Luck,

Yes, Sid, mentioned the need for a wider beam. I will have to chat with Darrel Sorensen, about that, I intend to buy a "kit" to build my boat since I don't have a shop here to cut out all the pieces (not to mention no place to buy marine grade wood here in Calgary). I'm not sure what the sizes are on the Sorensen, could you suggest any other builders who supply "kits" just incase, I do want to assemble my boat myself and not just buy a completed hull (hey, that's part of the fun of the sport isn't it).
