  • MHRA - Never Ever Racer Program

Tom Lowe does a fantastic job with his pics and comments. He hinted at a subperb program the MHRA is doing. I felt this program deserved a thread of its own for thanks.

Never Ever Racer - Allows anyone who has never raced a boat to jump in a rig and go for some laps. All it takes is your interest. MHRA has lined up three rigs for folks to test. There is a J rig for the young guys and gals and also an ASH and 20SSH. On Friday in very bad conditions the never ever racers wanted to go for it. K&K Insurance Providers were on hand watching this program take place. The rain finally slowed and the newbies had at it. There were several workers involved. I wandered down to have a look and watch the program myself. I saw Dean Sutherland and Mark Miskeric working very very hard in windy, rainy chilly conditions to get I think 9 participants out. Another outstanding volunteer was Laura Wheeler. She was in the water for close to three or 4 hours catching boats coming in, helping instruct the participants and in general doing whatever. Many other folks were helping out with Lifejackets, Kevlar, and all the saftey equipment to fit the various sizes of the drivers. The cool thing about this program is it is never ever racers. As a result two of these participants competed in the races this past weekend. I know one is hooked for life as she said so. The other participant I did not get a chance to speak to, but I bet they are hooked.

I know Region 7 is working on putting together some rigs for a program similar to this. Every club and region should try to copy this program. I think it is that great. I also know Sorenson has a similar program out west with the NorCal title.

So, for you racers that thinking of retiring some equipment or selling it cheap, please consider donating it to your club to use in a program like this.

My hat is off to the MHRA, job well done. And please, continue with this program.

This is the best form of advertising our kneel down boat racing can have. Getting folks into boats to try it out is key here. This program is doing what most have talked about for 20 years.

Many thanks to all those who also loaned rigs to the never ever racers to race in their first sanctioned racer. This is how we grow the sport. No amount of ads or talk is going to accomplish what this does.

So spread the word, get this program in your club, at your races each and every time. Boat racing is not dying with programs like this.

    Great job MHRA

I know Dean, Mark and Laura are always selflessly doing whatever they can to help our sport grow. This is by FAR the best way to do it. As I have said before, we're using the crack dealer business model, the first hit is free, from there we usually have you hooked.

We have had great success with a similar program here in Region 10. Our big test ride program happens July 10th at Capitol Lake in Olympia. We get the majority of our test drivers signed up at the Wooden Boat festival July 4th weekend. I also noticed that we have been announcing sign-ups over the PA at recent races, another great idea. I know that Mike Harmon and Jason Seather (last year's APBA Stock rookie of the year) got their starts through this program. Keep up the good work, our future depends on it.

      Thanks!

      Dave/Tony,
Thanks for the kind words. We are only starting the MHRA "Racer School" program and after 2 sessions (1 last Fall and 1 last weekend at Constantine) we had some great success and also have learned where we can improve. Our plan will be to host 2 per year at our MHRA races starting in 2010. We really believe this program has a lot of merit and want to grow it going forward. We encourage other clubs to try it and would be happy to talk to anyone interested in learing more about how we operate our program (not to say it's the best or only way).

Dave mentioned a few names that helped out, but have to mention Tracy Trolian and Kelly Ladd who helped out on the radios as well as getting the students into the gear and answering questions.

Brian Cafarelli and Jim and Logan Sweeney manned the safety boats as well as set the course and towed in a few of them when the shut off the throttle too soon. Better than running onto the beach.

Of course none of this would be possible without the donations of too many to name. Whether boats, motors, safety equipment or propellers, a lot of people have stepped up to help out.

My 16 year old Son was one of the kids that enjoyed the privilege to participate in the racer school (21 June) and the Never Ever Raced Program (22 June) in Constantine. Yes, I have to echo the praise given above. Thanks to all the MHRA members that took the time to teach and mentor and to those that loaned the equipment to make this happen. This was (is) a really cool program. Not only is my son hooked, I have a new fever and my wife and other family members had such a good time that they support our desire to equip ourselves with another hobby Again, thanks to MHRA, its officers and members: We hope to see you all again soon.

Opps, those dates should have been June 19 and 20. I should proof read before pressing the post button
