It's a lot easier said than done to win with a C Mod Merc. Yes you can win some local races but I don't know how long it's been sense a Merc won C hydro at any National. We have a pretty good one and it is a middle of the pack at a National. You can take a average Yamato and beat a pretty darn good Merc. Don't tell me about it show me I'm from Missouri.

I have a couple stock Mark 30 powerheads laying on my garage floor. I'll give 'em away for shipping cost. I tried to sell them on eBay last year, no bidders and no reserve.
            I don't race C class... and I have a problem with racing a 50 year old motor.

Can anyone tell me why the exhaust opening had to be welded back on the housing of the Ebay Engine?

Did racers have a reason to cut this off?

                  Tower Housing Weld

Just guessing here, but some non racers, lake runners, welded or bolted the exhaust 'snout' from a KG9 / Mark 40 style service tower onto the 'H' exhaust outlet to quiet the motor down some... That way they could rip around on public lakes and not get a ticket. I've seen several done with bolt on's, leaving just a pair of small holes, when the snout is removed.

This one looks like it may have been cut off, then rewelded on to restore?

Just guessing, as that's not a point of common structural failure.

It might have interfered with a steering bar mounted gas tank at one time, too

                      Mercury "C" MOD engine

Doug Kay finished my "C" MOD engine and we ran it last weekend in the purple dyno. The blocks was a .030" 30-H item that Dick O'Dae worked at some time and had his name stamped in the block next to the serial number. We used the Harry Brinkman five time natioal championship crank, ported it to his last notes, used an old nearly new set of Hubbel four pipe stacks, a stick tower and a 30-H quickie with 16/21 gears. Put about 20 min. on the engine and all went well. Next step is to boat test the engine. Hope you like the photos.

I bet you're real popular with the neighbors right now! How long before the police showed up?

The motor looks awesome! Thanks for the pics.

                          Well here is the truth

Well Doug Lives up in the Detroit area and everyone was out doing there lawn so it seems like we had the loudest weed wacker in town. Actually everyone came to look at it. Only did a few runups so it wasn't that bad. Hope to boat test it soon.

                            Nice Engine

                            Looks like a nice restoration.

One quick question to help you guage some speed secrets. Did you port the engine according to Harry's book or according to what the rule book currently indicates in APBA ?

The rules have opened up for that engine considerably in APBA since the manual was printed. Can you imagine what Harry could have done with the rules of today for that engine.

Hi Alan- Doug did a great job on the engine. Let us know how it goes when on the hydro WITH pictures.

                                30-h Mod

                                Hi Al,
As soon as I get the engine on a boat I will post some photos and numbers. The engine was ported to Brinkmans notes that are somewhat different than the latest manual. I have all his notes and will update the manual as time permits. I will do one more "C" MOD engine with a bunch of tricks simular to the TX444DK that were building. That engine should be ready to run once the carbs get here.
I'm sure Harry would have lots of fun with todays rules.

                                Alan
