Top Gun.. not true.. it is 16:21 not 21:16..
There are different ratios available on Hatchet gearboxes that can turn a mediocer prop into a great prop. If a fella had the time and money to experiment with ratios and set up I have no doubt a C Mod Merc, to current specs, could out run the best Yamato 102 to current specs.Dave Mason

The biggest problem the Merc guys will face is not a lack of special parts or a lack of know how.
As soon as someone starts to run well with a Merc I'm afraid the Yamato Mafia will insist on a "parity rule".
Just look at the recent action in 350 mod hydro. At least someone will have the honor of getting a rule named after them.

The last guy who won both the APBA and AOF Nationals the same year (1996) with a 30-H ran 1:1 gears. At the AOF race he also got a chance to run a new Yamato powered boat for Dan Parker in the AOF 102 Mod class and won that class as well. Funny how he bought his own Yamato that winter and the Mercury disappeared. And no one since then has set more records or won more APBA nationals than his Yamato CMH rig.
I never did understand why he switched. After all, his Merc was faster!

here is the CMH:
Besides, unless you want to do a ton of testing with new props, set-ups, and find all those so called special parts, you are better off with a Yamato for competition. Pull the rope and go, easy to maintain, easy to work on, dependable, and available in quantity. Anyone who races a merc C today is simply a person who has a passion for that engine and likes to tinker.Dave Mason

David,
No he doesn't have access to that 30-H anymore. It met its demise at Dayton Ohio on a CMR along with its owner. I don't know if it was ever reassembled after that. Ricky Engler may still have it or pieces of it. However it was kind of a twin to another motor that we think still exists, last heard of in Canada.

C-Mod seems like one of the really affordable "mod" classes to enter. If you use a 30 merc there are a few more variables... ie, things that can go wrong. First, you've got 4 cylinders not 2. You have a mag with bearings, a pulley, and a belt; a rotor cap; 4 plug wires to short out. You have 2 carbs with w hi-speed needles (nobody EVER changes the packing glands) which may vibrate loose and cause you to fall off. Your baffle in front of your carbs may not block the water from being injested! Your Merc lower unit isn't as robust as the Yamato. Your exhaust 'filler block' may not be sealing well, or it may be 'pressing' against the cylinders to heaviliy! Your crankcase pressure may be crap causing you not to pump enough fuel to your 2 carbs! The carbs you've chosen may be bad news.
Bottom line is obviously to test the heck out of your rig and fix all these things.. REALLY fix them.. then find a boat and prop that works. That's probably the reason the YAMATO's are the motor of choice. But, as others have said, it makes you feel all the more stronger when you end up out front running a Mercury 30.
Don Hurd has a couple pretty potent Merc's downeast.
