  • 20 Stock Kneeler Class

There's a new Stock Outboard class, it's called 20 Stock Kneeler. That's .20 ci. Yes, it's an Radio Control class. Check it out. It's a 1/4 semi-scale hydro, minimum length of 34" with a stock K&B, OS Max or Thundertiger outboard. New outboards are available complete with steering bar and prop! Jerry Dunlap has started and promoted the class. It's catching on! Here's my latest hydro.

Why do all the RC boats turn the wrong way?

        It just hurts my eyes

Brad, RC boats have left hand spinning props which cause these boats ( any type
race boat for that matter with a surface piercing set-up) to turn right better than
left. Why stocks run in left hand turning courses is beyond me because we also
run left hand spinning props. OPC runs right hand props and I'd bet inboard does
also. The reason is the direction prop walk wants to steer the boat, and torque
also comes into play. Driving a pleasure boat with a large hp engine and mechanical
steering and it will steer with little effort to the left, but it takes some muscle
          to turn right quickly.

The V-bottom csr I've been working on turns better right than left!

So, Brad the RC boats are racing in the correct direction!

              Force of habit!?

From past experience with glo-plug engines like these, we could start them easily in either direction since there is no ignition timing issue. So it seems like you could put the correct prop on and just start them in the opposite rotation and turn left.

                    Ambidextrous?

                    a theory...

Most people are right handed. When leaning left for a left hand turn, the dominant right arm is working the boat in the turn more than the left. The outer leg (right) also exerts more force against the combing to secure the driver. So regardless of what makes more sense rotation wise, the early racers probably set the left turn tradition because it was easier physically.

                    any takers?

These racers are testing without safety boat and started them on shore with prop. LOL no problem with having EMT's. Did not see any porta-potties. Hmmmm????

That reminds me of I.M.P.B.A. days gone. I ran B tunnel. (.21 C.I. or 3.5cc)!
We would be testing and a friend would have an inboard and we'd all have tunnels,(O/B). On an outboard. there is a power take/off on the business or crankcase end of the motor, where inboards take their power right off the flywheel end.
So after starting my friends inboard, we might forget to reverse polarity on the starter motor. It's always exciting when you toss it in at around twenty thousand RPM and it tries to climb right up your arm!!
You learn about things this way.

Typical outboard model engines ( as previously pictured ) have the fuel/air induction timed going through the crankshaft, therefore they will NOT run in both directions. As far as propellers go, about 98% of all model props made are for counter-clockwise rotation ( same as big outboards ) but there are some made for larger engines that are used in twin engined boats ( not outboards ) where one engine runs in the opposite direction to help counter act the torque and to eliminate unwanted propwalk. Most of these larger engines have their fuel/air mixture timed with a rotor-style induction system which is driven by the crankshaft at the crankpin. Many of these engines you can flip the rotor/housing/carb 180 degrees and the engine will run in the opposite direction. Hope this explains a few things to everyone.

Here in the US we race all kinds of things, boats, horses, cars, etc., counter-clockwise while most of the rest of the world, F1, etc., run clockwise.
