Will a 102 stock gear case fit on a 302? Want to test my new 302 motor and MJR but the reworked gear case is not back from TJ. Will be testing May 2nd and 3rd with our 102's and 80 for sure anyway

It will fit but you can't race it, it isn't legal. You may see different speeds than your 302 gearcase also.Ryan Runne

The 102 and 302 gear case are the same except for the 302 tail cone. Ryan 4z is correct that you cannot use a 102 gear case on a 302. But you can use a 302 gear case on a 102 for racing. WHY??? When the 302 came out it was believed that the 302 would blow the socks off the 102. Also some on the SORC believed that the 102 gear case was faster than the 302 gear case. Since proven to be incorrect. Many of us have broken the skeg off our 102 gear case. So that is why the SORC allows 102's to use the 302 gear case.bill b

Thanks for the info guys. As long as they will interchange I am good to go. Just checked the AOF rule book and it states 102-202-302 all model gear cases are considered legal and interchangeable. Did not think to check the rules.Mike - One of the Montana Boys

Since we are on this subject, what are the significant differences between the 102 powerhead and the 302 ?
Obviously the ignition , and the reeds, and the exhaust manifold. The bore/stroke are the same, but are the rods the same length? Are the pistons interchangeable, anything else
The 302 appears to be becoming the motor of choice in CSH.
Is this as a result of the height rules taking effect, or are guys learning how to build these powerheads.Brian Hendrick, #66 F

Answer is "D" All of the above.
But here is the big one. The Stock Outboard Racing Commision has stated it will continue to make rule changes to support motors for Stock Outboard "in current production".
102 has not been made in 10+ years, you can buy a new (factory reconditioned) 302 right now.
Note the recent rule change to the "I" dimension on the head, and this was after a 302 won the Nats in CSH. Craig Bowman won Nats CSR with a 302 10+ years ago.
